Not moto bikes.


Im looking to buy a trail bike this week and wondering what you all have. I really dont care for names, as long as its not pink with purple flowers and a basket, im good.

Just want a good trail bike, for a good price, that is in the US.

I got a Blue/Grey GT Palomar for $250 dollars 2 weeks ago. Its got front suspension, 21 speeds, grips shift, and uhhhh..... i don't know..brakes.

it gets me where i need to go. I just dont like the tires it came with

If you're just looking for something casual for trails, I'd suggest a hardtail, without disc brakes (unless you don't mind spending more). I've got a Trek 4500 Alpha -- nice and lightweight, good for on and off road. Be sure to test a bunch of different brands. I know Specialized and Giant are great bikes, but I personally don't like the feel of them. Other people do. It's very subjective.

I have a specialized StumpJumper FSRxc. It's a good bike, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Just make sure you get the bike that fits you. Basically the price breakes down as follows:

$700-1200 is a decent starter mountain bike that will get you through most of it.
$1200-2000 is a solid pro bike that will be more than what you need for racing.
$2000+ will get you fancy goodies that say you have a lot of money as opposed to good biking skills.

Yea, thnx canis, but way way too expensive. 1k for a bike another time would be cool, but Super Master plan of fincial freedom takes first place, 250 or so is what my limit is for now.

$250 will buy you a standard bike with treaded tires. If you're looking to go down some back country dirt roads then that will do, but dont expect it to hold up too well on rougher condition.

want something under $300 canadian, and that i can do wheelies and bunnyhops on, but also get around town on (i.,e. gears).

any advice on what not to get, or how not to get suckered?

Try to get something like what I posted above used. You can get an old 96 Giant ATX 970 or something equivalent for about 300$ cdn. I wouldn't buy a new bike for 300$ you're just gonna get a cheap bike that'll give you problems in the future. I'd suggest a good quality used bike that's in good shape, that way if you choose to bu some better components for it later you'll be building on a nicer frame instead of buying a whole new bike.

tx - yea the place i'm getting it from is run by a guy who puts together his own bikes from second hand parts.

I got mine about 4 years ago, and it was already a year-old model. So it was marked down to make way for the new models. I also got some other sales discounts on it, so it came out to something around $480 USD. That was bare minimum, too -- without things like disc brakes and clipless pedals, which I added later. I'd expect a new one to run about $600 or so.

They've got a ton of models to choose from, though, so I'm sure there are pleanty priced all over the board.

well i just put a downpayment on a second hand Giant Boulder. He's gonna charge me around $200 canadian.

Not a bad lil shimmy, man, thats cool man, really getting on that health kick eh. I think i figured out my key today, its not that i ride its that i have a bike to ride, its not that i surf its that i have a board to surf, you dig ?


Having these things to do and mix it up and stay interesting is the key to keeping it from being boring and hard to keep up. So like maybe ride a few days then run, then swim, mix it up.

Changing my diet too though. No more pizza and pints of ben and jerry's, switching over to wraps and low fat stuff now. Not turing to vegan, but just eating really healthy stuff. What you eat jules, got a special kinda diet?

yea that's the one though it's a much older model i think.

Yea been eating healthily for a couple years now - started working out back in 2003 and just been trying to improve since.
