Moving to a foreign speaking land....

...I shall be doing it in 2 weeks, got a new job in Paris. During the interview I was asked whether I spoke French, I said yes, which isn't entirely true, but I'm confident I can arrogantly mumble my way through until I get into contract security where they can't sack me even if they want to. Anyone else done the move with no relevant linguistic skills? I have done a few weeks work in buttfuck nowhere town in Australia, that was virtually another language...

Well lucky for you the French are so accommodating and always more than happy to converse in English rather than their native language.

I was about to post the same.

Also you know you can't even complain about immigrants not speaking your language now right?
Personally I feel it's common courtesy to learn a country's language when you plan on living there, but maybe that's none of my business.

should have moved to Brussels or Prague, then the above statement would have been an accurate statement of fact instead of sarcasm

I lived in the east end of london for a couple of years, I was the minority over there, both visually & audibly, & by god I was accommodating. And french isn't that different to what I speak already, rendezvousing with the blancmange for example.

Heh didn't realise it was broadcast outside of the UK. The humour is quite british :o.

It was actually syndicated all over the world, probably still is.

Also part of the humour is all the archetypes and their different accents.. an element that made the original Asterix comics evenly brilliant. and those would be french :p

I watched it growing up in Finland but Canadians were too dumb to appreciate it. Still have the complete DVD set though.

Fun fact, it's actually "TLER", as in the latter part of 'hitler'. But with a thick accent and kermit voice.

Didn't know that until now. TV shows were never dubbed in Finland (because dubbing is retarded) but the subtitles always said "KLOP" for Hans' greeting. Pretty sure it was the same for BBC's tele-text, not sure though.
