So I am after a tablet and I have been looking at the iPads and wondered what the best Android tablets people have used are?

I would like something that plays HD films, plenty of space and doesn't weigh loads.

edit: The one thing I'd disagree with them about is the Nexus 10. It was a great tablet when I got it in Nov 2012 [when it was released]. But nearly 1.5 years later, I wouldn't buy it today. It's held up fairly well, but is nearly at the end of its lifecycle at this point.

You may also want to look up what was annouced at the recent MWC.

Also, the iPad Air is pfg and I'd at least consider it. Why have you discounted that option entirely?

I have the Google Nexus 7.

I don't feel like it's overly heavy, I stream Pandora on it for 8 hours straight at work with battery life left at the end of the day, 16 or 32 gig options.

Does me just fine, I would recommend Maybe the Nexus 10 if you're primarily watching video though.

I've not discounted the iPad entirely, but the 128gb model I want is £639, which is quite a bit of cash. That's enough for my flights to the Austin GP in November, and I would need to wait until payday to get one.

Common consensus (not just on this board) is that the iPad is still the one to get?

The Nexus 7 is awesome. I'm happy enough with my Note 10.1. I hear the 2014 model has better resolution, faster CPU/GPU and everything.

I have both an iPad (4) and Nexus 7. They are both great devices, but it all depends on what you want to use them for.

First, size: the iPad is big and heavy (although the new iPad Air should be a lot lighter) and as such not as easy to take with you. The Nexus is obviously a lot smaller, so much so that you can hold it comfortably with one hand.

Both are fast (altough since iOS 7 the Nexus feels faster to me, damn you Apple and your bloated OS) and both are quality build.

If you plan on using it for anything music related the iPad still is the only choice. For productivity, games or entertainment there really is no difference (anymore).

Film watching, web browsing and that's about it really. So battery life, memory and screen sharpness is key. Also the ability to play mkv files

Gave the missus the Nexus 7 to use for work and entertainment for her birthday, she seems quite pleased with it. Haven't messed around with it myself too much, i prefer a real computer for just about anything. Encouraged her to root the damn thing but she's scared... and i can't be bothered Been told it's a better beast when rooted, but what are you gonna do eh. Battery life, screen sharpness and all of that stuff is pretty good on the Nexus 7 i think.

The only thing that really bugged me was that the left speaker inexplicably died some 2 weeks after purchase - had to take the thing back and it took 3 weeks for them to fix it.

I've used iPads and a number of different Android tablets. I'd go with the iPad, working on one doesn't annoy me nearly as much as on an Android... but why the 128GB one? Do you really need that much space?

I've got a first edition Nexus 7, but it doesn't get that much use to be honest. Weirdly, it gets used more for work than home when I do use it.
At home, I'm just too set in my ways to use anything other than a console or a PC.

What I will say though is that in order for any Nexus hardware to really sing, you're probably going to want to adopt the whole Google-centric thing.
While storage on my Nexus 7 (and ageing Galaxy S2) is limited, my Google Drive makes that more than bearable.

In addition, unlike current iDevices, you can load any data you like onto a Nexus device, from any source, and it won't whinge.

While the Play store is useful, remember that you're not limited to that closed environment on Nexus devices. For example, I've bought some Android games through the Humble Bundle, and they can be downloaded from the website.

And you can also just drag and drop shit onto a Nexus device when it's plugged in to your PC / Mac. You don't have to rely on a piece of proprietary bloatware like iTunes.

Personally, just that little extra added openness makes Android devices a more attractive option than iPads or iPhones.

Feel free to correct me if I've painted Apple devices unfairly. While I use a MacBook for work, I've not had an iPhone for ages now

Mat's post contains the huge selling points for me when I picked out the Nexus.

Depends on what you plan on doing with it. Ipads are generally for people who aren't really techy people while android tablets are useful for people who want more out of a tablet.

What annoys the shit out of me for ipads is that you constantly need to use itunes with it.

If you don't care about that kind of stuff then I'd say go ipad, you'll probably find better games for it anyway.

If film watching constitutes half of what you're going to use it for, then I'd skip the iPad. It has a 4:3 aspect ratio screen, so you'll have black bars on most content. Also the matter of mkv files and not having to use iTunes. If you're fine with 7" then the 2013 Nexus 7 is by far the best choice, it's a beast. At 10" it becomes a bit trickier.
