so i've decided to put together a new workstation. i've been using my current setup for almost 3 years now (amd xp 2100) and am looking to do a complete overhaul that might last me 3 years again. my budget will be $3000. (monitor not included - i already have that part). i was messing around on newegg and came up with this setup....

That looks good, and when games start to slow down on yer rig, all you gotta do is buy another geforce 6800 gt and put in yer motherboard slot(maybe 2 years from now..and they wont cost many bucks lol)

Im building a new one aswell, but i will wait until the deal with the bank is done and then im starting to build a phat gaming rig.

that configuration already has 2 6800gt's in it. i figured i might as well go all-out while i'm putting the machine together from the get-go.

what i was trying to find (unsuccessfully) is a graphics card that would support a 30" Apple Cinema Display. i couldn't find any on newegg that have Dual-Link DVI.

Looks pretty good. But if you're spending that kind of money, spend a little extra on the San Diego core. 1MB L2 cache for what looks to be about a $50 premium over the same speed with only 512K. I think it's worth it.

I don't know anything about "Dual-Link DVI." If a card has 2 DVI ports, that's not enough? You need a special card? In that case, you might not be able to run that off a PC...I don't know.

lol, so the venice core is outdated already? and we have the chicago, errr, san diego core to go by now? :icon32:

I'd say get 2gb of ram, seeing as you work lots with media-intensive apps like photoshop, otherwise it looks like a good setup.

yeah, Dual-Link DVI utilizes all 24 of the DVI pins (which are required for the 30" Apple Cinema Display).

i have 3GB of RAM in that configuration, by the way.

thanks for the tip on the San Diego core. by the time i put this system together, however, i may decide to do a dual core chip instead. i didn't see them anywhere on newegg...

No, Venice isn't outdated. If I were building a system, I'd get a Venice. The San Diego is essentially the Venice but with double the L2 cache.

Venice = 3000, 3200, 3500, 3800 @ 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.4GHz all 512K L2 cache

San Diego = 3700, 4000 @ 2.2, 2.4GHz with 1MB L2 cache

So the lowest San Diego is the same speed as the Venice 3500+ but with twice the L2 cache. Nobody knows how high they will go yet. Peope are overclocking them to 2.7-2.8GHz on air...

And ssb:
Dual cores will be out this fall at earliest. Probably late fall. And the cheapest one will be close to $600. So, depending on what programs you intend to "work" with on this "work"station, it's either a great idea (dual CPU replacement) or just a so-so idea ( very expensive CPU with 1 core unused in the next year or so).

Venice core: I've got the 3500

Power supply: Its black, very quiet and the removable wires own.

Motherboard: So far so good but my primary nic was acting up so I had to disable it.

Hard drives: Wait for good SATA2 to come out

Video cards: I'm not running SLI yet so I can't comment

Case: Looks kinda gay...

and the power supply posted in this topic looks quite a bit better than the one i chose.

the case doesn't really matter, i guess... i like Lian Li cases, personally. also, the fact that it has front panel USB/Firewire/Audio was a big plus.

i may wait until the dual core chips come out if they will be that much better. i do game a bit, but i spend most of my time working in Graphic / Web Design applications. thus i called it a "workstation." i was thinking of doing a dual-G5 Apple system, but i would still like to have a large choice of games to play.

I have the OCZ Powerstream PSU. They are fairly highly regarded, but have green LED fans which I don't care for. But just don't get that Ultra X-Connect unless you want to destroy your $3,000 computer.

so in that case the Antec Neo PSU is a better choice? i've only ever used Antec PSU's in the computers i've built for myself or others. never once had a problem.

If you really want modular, yes.
I think my PSU is the best you can get for under $200. And it's damn quiet. The only thing I don't like are the green fans.

The cheapest 16MB one is $185 at newegg. A bit expensive, aint it? Will SATAII be replacing SATA(I) or what?

It should be. SATAII implements command queueing which is the major benefit of the SATA architecture.

according to me, that is not true..

the drives ( that i've build 8 computer with now ) are SATA Gen1! they are 16meg cache and holy FUCKBALLS they own the living Fuck out of my WB 8meger SATA drive..

i would also like to add, that.. they Might NOW be sata Gen 2.. But for sure, i dont know.

what I don't get is, will a 64 bit system benefit in performance with just a 64 bit OS or do the rest of your software have to be 64 as well?

I'm guessing all the imbeded features with the OS will run better?
