A mystery wave of cosmic radiation that smashed into Earth in the eighth century may have come from two black holes that collided, a study says.

Clues for the strange event were unearthed last year by Japanese astrophysicist Fusa Miyake, who discovered a surge in carbon-14 - an isotope that derives from high-energy radiation - in the rings of ancient cedar trees.

Dating of the trees showed the burst struck the Earth in either 774 or 775 AD.

I'm just waiting for the Milky Way to smash into the Andromeda, whereupon the respective black holes at the centre of each will merge and send out a gamma ray burst so strong that our atmosphere gets completely blown away. Or something.

lol by that time Earth would have already been a cinder from our own Sun.

The scary part is that at any minute we could all be wiped out by interstellar forces so far beyond our control we cannot hope to imagine/conquer.

It's true. The universe is a god damn violent place. I read a few days ago that scientists figure that comet Apophis will miss us in 2036 (damn!) but I'm sure there will be lots of other objects flying our way. They're putting a new orbital telescope out there in the next few years, to replace the Hubble. Will be interesting to see how that bad boy does.

We might even be able to see Duhard's pictorial with it. Very exciting stuff.

There's the 2012 asteroid n all but he ain't no planet killer, he does pass between us and the moon and will be in distance to take a few satellites out in Feb of this year (I actually thought it was December before I just went to find some info ?)

I think this one had a chance of coming back round and giving us a new crater in 2020 or someshit but that was cleared up and panic over. Where there's one small one tho there's always a big bastard that we might not get so lucky with but like life, it's a lottery

we were finding diamonds simply said by measuring the magnetism of the host rocks. At the time the host rock shot up from the craton deep below earth and cooled on surface south magnetic pole was north and north was south. The rocks cooled with their crystal structures pointing south thus our instruments showed an extremely low messed up magnetism.
Drill the messed up magnetic circular host rock "kymberlite" and pray it intruded through the diamond stability field and also that the heat and pressure was sufficient to keep diamonds as diamonds and not revert back to carbon.
I mention the above since we have been due for a long time for the poles to reverse again as it has done many times.
Of course when it does we will all die a violent gibless death.

I heard this was not that big a deal ?, that the magnetic field has a switch every 10,000 years maybe and that it only reduces the fields strength by 10% during this time anyways. When we say we're due one n all, could be anytime between now and upwards of 2000 years like.

Whilst this is going on magnetic north could be at a few separate locations at the same time n all and the possibility of seeing the borealis at different locations around the globe, could be pretty awesome
