How different are dogfighting and football?

Fascinating article on American football and the longterm mental issues that players have to deal with. Also compares it with dogfighting in that it's fundamentally a betrayal of trust to the players/dogs from their respective "owners".

Good read, started .... but have to come back & finish as it is long
I never understood the apparent fascination with 'football', especially the aggressive contact varieties; the non sphere shaped ball ones.
Wonder. is that because I played soccer in my early years and can still talk about it

Incidentally, this was posted over at slashdot:
"On the heels of the latest NFL suicide, researchers announced today that 34 NFL players whose brains were studied suffered from CTE, a degenerative brain disease brought on by repeated hits to the head that results in confusion, depression and, eventually, dementia.
