http://www.dropbox.com

Download for PC and install it. You can then point it to a folder on your HDD and it'll automatically sync the files in there to the Dropbox servers (the fabled "cloud"). If you install the iOS Dropbox app then those files are available to download to your phone as well. Haven't used the iOS version myself, but I suspect it's the same as Android, and that works like a charm.

Of course you can use multiple devices like your home PC and work PC or whatever so you've got important files available in both locations and synched.

Other similar alternatives are Google Drive and Microsoft Skydrive. Dunno if those offer iOS apps though.

Dropbox would require uploading to their server and then downloading it on the device. So if you're not on a truly unlimited data plan, that might be a bad idea.

I haven't used FileBrowser that shaft linked, but after a quick look I'd be more inclined to use that, DC.

If he's on WiFi, as he mentioned, then he'll incur no data charges on his phone, he'll just have to deal with Dropbox's storage limit.

probably. you need to allow your device to be used as a storage device tho.

pretty sure this wont work with music, as it needs some arcane directory structure. not sure though.

Indeed
If it wasn't for being forced to use iTunes I'd say it was the best phone I ever owned. But I do have to use iTunes so therefore it isn't and never will be.

Interesting - I don't use the sync function on iTunes though. I prefer to do it all manually :ninja:

Why do you hate iTunes? Use it manage your library and it will stop sucking. Look up some tricks you can do with smart playlists and play around with them. I have a set of playlists that allow me to maintain my library such as deleting short interlude/skit tracks, deleting duplicates or dead files, and deleting songs I rated 1 or 2 stars. It probably helps that I have my library setup on the laptop I use for work, so I use iTunes DJ and stuff a lot to listen to music at work. It uses a lot of ram but fuck it 222mb is nothing out of 16gb.

I have my phone setup to sync a manual playlist I setup to throw on must-have albums/songs, a smart playlist of my top 25 most played, a smart playlist of the 100 most recently added songs in my library.

I'll gladly sync with iTunes to get all the meta-data and playlists that make managing the music so much easier. I shuffle all songs by genre a lot on the phone depending on my mood.

It would mean making changes to all the id3 tags of the MP3s I have collected throughout my life. I am slowly doing it and once complete it will probably be a lot better. Saying that I do find it troublesome to use, at best.

There should be an option in iTunes to manually manage your music, which will allow you to drag and drop songs from your library to your iPod. No syncing necessary.
