Don't know if anyone here cares, but it helps a lot to hear from others so I'll post it just in case. I've spent a lot of time tweaking the drum sound (BFD2 vst) and the mix sounds pretty good to me now, though it could still be better of course.

Thanks! Yeah I play everything except the drums which are programmed. Here's what I used:
Ibanez RG1527 guitar
Yamaha RBX 375 bass
Dunlop Cry-baby 535q for the solo in the end
Axe Fx II for simulating amps, I use the Euro Über amp which is based on a Bogner Überschall
one time drum posted a clip of his drum recording and if i remember correctly he said he used sm57 or 58 into maybe a small makie then into a soundblaster lol
fucking sounded awesome, not fancy bigg'ening magic or anything, nothing specialed up, just awesome sounding straight ahead drum sound
of corce he has pro playing and excellent sounding drums and cymbals , yamaha drums maybe?

This reminds me of http://dwellingofduels.net/ - Lots of videogame inspired covers etc on there - if you go into "past duels" there are downloadable mp3s of all the past submissions.
Their format is basically a month for submissions on a theme, then the top 3 are picked.
