Is this a "british only" joke?

he was a popular and innovative radio and tv host years back, especially for music shows - then he had another show where kids would write to him saying things they wanted to do that could be done on a BBC budget (drive a fire engine, score a goal at wembley etc,.). he'd arrange it for them and then, to remember the day, he'd give them a big shiny necklace from a secret compartment in the arm of his chair. he had half a dozen catchphrases, always wore a tracksuit and smoked his trademark cigar.

he became increasingly eccentric as he got older, but nobody minded because he raised millions of pounds for charity by running marathons. it was on the national news when he died, and then it turned out that he was a rapist and a child molester so they smashed up his gravestone.

Jimmy Savile is the name.
