New Stuff for You

Hey guys,

It's been awhile since I've posted here, but I have recently finished a new map (redq3dm5 - "panopticon") and I also have revamped and released a new version of my demo reel.

The demo reel cen be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2F6gUwUKoQ

And the new map can be viewed from the 2:18-2:45 mark in the video.

Unfortunately, I don't have any screenshots that I can show you at this time... so sorry for the rather cryptic post here, but I think if you just watch the video it will all make sense.

redq3dm5 should be in the lvlworld queue sometime soon (hopefully in a day or two). If anyone wants to review it, that would be great! Indeed, I think it's probably the best map I've ever made. Definately the best map I've made in terms of gameplay.

Thanks.

EDIT: Critiques have suggested that this original demo reel is too slow/boring (Intro and Outro) and too repetitive (Middle Section). I have addressed these concerns and released a new and improved version which can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxftURfAG_A . Any comments on this new version would be much appreciated.

Also, redq3dm5 "panopticon" is now in the lvlworld queue ready to be reviewed. If anyone wants to review it, that would be awesome. Thanks again.

imo....

52 seconds of blank at the start? then you go to repeat the same footage over like 8 times? (flying into the portal)

not meaning to be a punt, but in its current form its boring to watch... could be the effect of the music? i dunno. (being honest)

new map looks cool tho

Yea, I was wondering about that too. Since I worked on it so much, the whole thing kinda lost meaning after awhile and I wasn't sure if it was cool or just... redundant. I have another version with a different song altogether and it's much less repetitive. Perhaps I will go with that one. Thanks for the critique.

Most likely, it's done with the Q3MME mod.

Yep. q3mme. Awesome little program/mod. You can do a bunch of cool things with it, I recommend checking it out. It's really simple to use also. Well, maybe I should say, simple to learn, difficult to master?

I would agree with fKd, as someone who reviews demo reels this to me was a bit heavy on the teleporter bit and the time before we fade into the reel took a bit long. There is some nice looking work in there (everything from 2:20 until the end of the reel looked great), but what stood out to me at the end of the reel was, why is it focusing on the teleporter so much? The initial shot of the space, and then the transition at 2:47 were nice as they show you've done variation in your lighting, unless the blue was just screen filter effect. I would have liked to see more of your other spaces than the same one over and over.

Everything what my previous speakers said, I second.
- Titles are too long (maybe already use closeups of details, overlayed with a low opacity on top of each other and let them fly slowly)
- You always use the same cams: flying around leftwise an imaginary column
- Always the same long, forward tracking shot to the teleporter. Looks nice at the first time, but already gets annoying in the second time... maybe intercut it?
- make the trailer shorter, use less repetitions
- as well as intro: outro's too long (I had to learn this, too, in my first movie "Radiation", when my outro started already in the middle of the video... very bad gameplay/ttitles ratio)

Please reedit it! Your awesome maps deserve it!

Thanks for the feedback guys and a good smack in the ass.

You guys are right, the repetitiveness of the orginal demo reel is annoying. So I have fixed it.

I have used an entirely new song and I think it works a lot better now.

Please view the new reel here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxftURfAG_A .

Also, redq3dm5 "panopticon" is now in the lvlworld queue if anyone would like to review it. I definately think it's a map that deserves to be "released". If anyone would like to review it, it would mean a lot.

Thanks.

Okay,
I don't know if it is better now or same... You could easily have stopped after the first song at 3:07 or smth.
Use the outro as intro and just cut to black in the outro. I also suggest some match cuts. E.g. at 1.43. You could cut from map1 into map2 faking a transition by cutting into the left swing.
Still the whole movie feels too long. Maybe it's also because of the footage, you show every single corner, maybe pick out one or two beauties and tell thereby the viewer: if you want to see more, go play the map!
Which fov did you use btw?

I used 90-99. I changed the fov depending on the shot and the effect I was trying to create. The slower moving shots use a lower fov, while the faster shots use a higher fov for added "punch".
