Toh Chin Chye, a former deputy prime minister and chairman of the People's Action Party (PAP) has died at 9:30 AM on February 3 at the age of 90. Dr. Toh is considered a founding father and national hero in Singapore, having been a leader in Singapore's struggle for independence from Malaysia. Dr. Toh bravely fended off socialists and communists alike, and he narrowly defeated the Socialist Front's chairman, Lee Siew Choh, in the 1963 general election by a mere 89 votes. This truly is a day of mourning, as the people of Singapore have lost a great leader and the world has lost a great freedom fighter in the struggle against communist oppression. May he rest in peace.
