Can someone sue you

For a $100 bucks if you are a freelancer and they are the big guy (you are the small guy) based on only $100? And say you live in a different state then them and did stuff online for them and they paid you but want a refund? However they asked for it in a rude way and you already did some of the work for them, but they all of a sudden dont want to use you anymore and want a refund?
ANd lets say they pay you out of the blue clearly because you were quitting working for them. Then later want a refund. Are you obliged to pay it back even though they clearly did it without any stipulations or contract to keep you on the job?

they could probably try to take you to small claims court, but their legal fees would be 10x more than the $100... unless they have a fraud or breach of contract and try to get some sort of damages. you're a complete fucking idiot though. based on that i'd assume you've done something criminal.
not a lawyer, but that's my 2cents.

Well they threatened to put the legal fees on me somehow. They said the court will make me pay their fees plus the $100.

What I'm afraid of is the case would be in their state and not mine, or sme far county from me (CA) and I wouldnt show up due to time and expense of travel, so they would win the judgement. The guy also may not even show up but send his big time lawyer and he is clearly doing all this just to prove a point against me and not that the $100 means anything to him by the way.
