It's nice. I wish it had more of a social playlist sharing component that didn't use facebook.

An online music service:
http://www.spotify.com
Been using it for quite some time myself now and I love it. Got a premium account so I can use it on my mobile phone as well. But that's only €10 a month, which is well worth the amount of music I listen to.

All the hip cats are using
Grooveshark these days.

But Grooveshark sucks balls.
I can't find half the stuff I'm looking for, the audio quality on files differs from good to really poor, different files aren't normalized so volume levels differ from song to song and there's a few other complaints I have about it as well.
I cannot imagine that anyone who has used Spotify before is willing to go (back) to Grooveshark.
Not to mention that Grooveshark's legal status is still slightly iffy.

Hey, I use neither service on a regular basis, I'm just reporting what my friends and colleagues use. But having a quick glance, I like some pretty obscure stuff, and I've found more of it on Grooveshark. Plus, no ads.

I haven't even been able to find a complete, properly sorted overview of the songs on Joe Satriani's "Surfing With The Alien" album. The funniest thing is that right now I've got a listing of what's supposed to be Surfing With The Alien, but only shows three quarters of the songs on there, two songs are listed twice and it's in fact showing the album art of a different Joe Satriani album.
Awesome.
Trust me, the only reason your friends are using Grooveshark because Spotify hasn't been available in the US for a long time. The €5 a month Spotify will cost you if you don't want to hear ads is well worth it.

UK here Eraser. Spotify's just gotten worse as the music industry have gotten their hooks deeper into it.

Ok I see.
I guess it's got to do with what you started out with, and the fact that Spotify has commercials if you don't pay €5 a month probably scares off some people as well. But I've tried both and I just cannot get enthusiastic about Grooveshark when I compare it to Spotify.
It is indeed notable that recently more music is getting revoked from Spotify, but it's still just a drop in the ocean of what they've got on offer. It's still a shame though so we'll have to see how this pans out.
I just wish the music industry in general would for once be constructive and set up a streaming service which isn't crippled by extremly high prices or crappy restrictions (or at least fully support it) instead of continually breaking down all efforts by others to set up something like this. But that's little more than wishful thinking I'm afraid.

seems to me, that this entire generation of music elites need to die off first, before you see some unsoiled, fresh minds in the game.

lol what. I have the remastered release of Surfing in front of my right now in Grooveshark. It took me less than 2 mins even. that was 2 mins including creating a playlist and direct url for you.
http://grooveshark.com/playlist/Surfing ... n/61263149
Don't try and nullify Matt's enthousiasm because you fail to use an app properly
tldr: l2grooveshark
[edit] "creating a playlist" means storing it for share, not "finding the individual tracks and sorting them properly" btw. kind of a misnomer here I admit.

I dunno. I hit "surfing with the alien" in the search box and clicked three different "album results" and none of those three were complete.
There's
this one that's missing 2 songs. There's
this one that's missing 3 songs while it lists two songs called "Hielo 09" and "Joe Satriani" which are... I dunno what. It also lists 3 songs twice. And finally there's
this one that, oh yeah, is mostly just one pile of junk. So tell me, how exactly did you find a complete, non-redundant, properly ordered list of the album?
edit:
and for some reason while using Grooveshark, it sometimes just kept getting stuck with a "loading..." dialog. Needed to close the tab and try again. Refreshing the page didn't help.

What's with this crappy update? Can you get the old layout back?
It's so bloated looking now. The old version was much cleaner and clearer... They have two different styled scrollbars in one window. Plus, the white background on half the window really clashes with the other half. Altogether a real abomination of an update.
