Rage

I was reading this months issue of Gameplay when I came across a preview of Rage. I learned some new things that I would like to share with you. I have no idea if this has been reported earlier, nor did I check if it did. Anyway, here we go:
  • There won't be any DM or CTF.
There are 2 MP gamemodes. One focussing on a Arena battle with vehicles and the other is a coop mission mode.
The game is a hardcore shooter with a very lean RPG component. This means a backpack with unlimited room, a simple crafting system, quests and NPC's. You can upgrade your weapons and your car but you won't be able to improve your character.
The editor will be available on the day of release.
Maps will be a lot harder to make in comparison to Doom 3 engine maps.
You will need a modelling program like Modo to create quality content.
The engine is completely modular. Each part can be replaced. Looking at the development of this tech, it's setup in a way so that they can use the engine a long time.
It's made to run on 60FPS.
The SP campaign will take about 15 - 20 hours.
There is very realistic damage and animation. If you shoot and enemy in the leg, he will walk like a criple. If you shoot him in the arm, he cannot use it anymore.
Next to the city areas there are also 5 different clans in the wasteland.
There will be a large variety of mutants to battle.
Id will listen to the community to decide what will be added as a DLC.
So, who's going to get it and is anyone interested in editing for Rage?

Minor correction, but it's 60Hz (good), not 60FPS (bad).

It looks like a good fun game to play.

[speculation]Editing will be difficult because of the sheer size of the megatexture's source data. I don't think it will necessarily mean Rage will be harder than Doom3 to edit on, id Studio looks like it is more intuitive to use than DoomEdit, but the typical Rage map just requires a volume of more work than a typical Doom3 map.[/speculation]

What I want to know is if Id Tech 5 is a FULL superset of Id Tech 4. Meaning, can you use dynamic illumination for all light sources and just bake AO, Normals, and un-lit diffuse (maybe some reflected ambient into the diffuse...) into the megatexture?

Were lights given extended capability, such as Cubemap or (even better) 3D texture projection?

Or, since Stencil Stadows appear to be scrapped, have light volumes also been removed in favor of some other bias method (pseudo volumes, env_cubemaps, etc).

Alright, listen to me id: stop thinking about this f*cking DLC crap somebody invented some time ago to harvest money with half-done products that can be expanded with tiny updates for high fees. There was a great invention a looong time ago. It was called "Addon". An addon is a large update with high quality content. It contains more than 10 new achievements and one new gun. Come one, this whole DLC thing is embarrassing. Rage is not yet in stores and they already think about DLCs? Simply great. Once, developers tried to put as much fun in their games as possible BEFORE they were sold. It seems times have changed. Today you get the first half of a game for the full price, and the second half a short time later - split to three packages - for the full price again.

If I'll buy it, I'll do it as soon as it's low-budget and contains all 23 DLCs that have been published so far. Money doesn't grow on trees :disgust:

And concerning editing: I'll leave that out and stick to Quake 3. The old girl is simple, runs fast and is fun at the same time. And once Eraser's mod is completely done I'll have quite a lot to do...

Remember the old RtCW days... Free map packs, then "hey we have a new game coming out thats like RtCW MP on drugs, with an amazing sp!" that turned into "Yeah the SP isn't gonna happen, but what the hell, hav the MP for free!"...

I really miss those days...

Not all games charge for their DLC's (ie. L4D, L4D2, TF2, Brink, etc.). I don't think id Software has said whether or not they will charge for the DLC, but id has been pretty reasonable in the past.

Came across this looking for an older post of mine. Funny to see how things turned out differently.

No mod tools on release day.
Most reports claim the game is finished under 10 hours.

Or latest example would be Portal2. Awesome new chambers have been added. And even a new video sequence. Great stuff.
