story at the beeb:BLASTS AT BRIT CONSULATE
Two small explosions have damaged a building housing the British Consulate in New York.
The blasts shattered windows in the building but no one has been injured.
Police said shrapnel pieced together at the scene suggested that two "novelty" devices were involved.
One was the size and shape of a pineapple, the second like a lemon. They detonated within a minute of each other. One had some gunpowder inside with a fuse.
A police spokesman said: "It was one of those things you light and then run."
The explosions happened at 3.50am - 8.50am British time.

One device was detonated in one of the cement flower boxes used as a barrier outside the building, situated at 845 Third Avenue, between 51st and 52nd streets - not far from the United Nations building.
The explosion blew out a chunk of the flower box and one window.
The road was closed for two blocks either side of the building, which was surrounded by police and bomb squad experts.
Police are checking if there is any security camera footage of what happened.
The New York consulate helps distressed Britons and can issue emergency British passports for a one-way journey to the UK.
It handles visa applications, as well as issues for British citizens such as the legalisation of documents and notices of marriage.
