my godfather used to take me and my sister to the banger racing when we were little. he'd spend a month or so tinkering with an old cortina or something, then mash it into shrapnel in about 20 minutes. loads of fun
is it safe(ish) these days? i don't remember rollcages or anything, come to think of it i'm not even sure that many of them wore crash helmets.

so would this be a demolition derby to us uncultured folk?

aye.
guess it's still the same these days - would be a few straight up races, then a race where you can smack into each other, then a last man standing free for all sort of thing.

lol, i went with my mate because hes been doing it for years, rallied the car round once and got to be a passenger 3 times

then spent the rest of the time in the pits watching the carnage, also the people who done it were safe as fuck, lending parts of there mashed up cars to fix his one
and yer, the races were like
1st round - 1st ride out, kinda seperates the weak from the strong
2nd round - < 2000
3rd round - > 2000
4th round - youth
5th round - caravan race (fucking aeesome, the object of the race is to park your car on top of the chassis of the caravan being toed by the lead car)
6th round - just racing for god knows why, general fuck around
then the last race was just a destruction feast
as for safety, i think its a lot safer, the one i went to all had rollcages, all glass removed, helmets etc etc

aye, rollcages, no glass, sealed doors, internal petrol tank, helmets n shit
what gets me is, if you get a flat tyre your out of the race and have to pull up
BUT if you loose a wheel(s) your quite welcomed to carry on

That's fucked up. You shouldn't be out until you can't move anymore.
