My wife and I are watching my friend's little kid this weekend and the bugger had the diarrhea not to be believed. I've been loader her up with the pedialyte to prevent severe dehydration....but can I give a 15 month old kid a small dose of loperamide (immodium)? Or do I just have to ride this out? This kid is like a garden hose of shit. If it doesn't clear up in the next 8 hours or so, I think we'll head over to the ER to check everything out.
But wasn't sure if docs ever prescribe an anti-diarrheal to a baby....
Let me know.

No, don't give immodium; the diarrhoea's likely to be infective, and immodium just means the nasty infected stuff hangs about in the bowel - bad news.
I'd just take the kid to get checked up if I was you, seeing as it's not yours.
Signs of dehydration you should look out for:
1) Dry eyes
2) Dry (inside of) mouth
3) not peeing a normal amount (important, this one)
4) not playing/lethargic
If you've got any of those and the kid's not drinking, you need to see a doctor straight away. Also if there's any blood or mucus in the poo, get it checked.
but seriously, NO immodium, and plenty of fluid - doesn't even have to be dioralyte, juice or, if push comes to shove, water will do.

Thanks, Geebs. I figured the immodium was a no-go for kids...she is doing well taking in lots of juice and the pedialyte. I'll keep tabs on the other symptoms. Like I said, if it doesn't clear up soon, I'll take her in.

Geebs is a real asset to this community.
Yesterday i had an interesting (drunken) conversation with a long-term friend of mine who's currently doing his master in 'Life Sciences' (mix between biology and chemistry) and he told me the exact same thing about the Immodium.
BTW: Feed her salty crackers and sugary soda.

Well, since this is a doctor's thread...
My doctor acts like I'm eventually gonna get skin cancer. He keeps cutting out stuff and frowns a lot when he looks at my skin.
Should I worry?

As long as there are doctors in the house.. will physical strain worsen someone's rheumatoid arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by excess estrogen (usually after menopause, where hormone levels skyrocket) reacting with testosterone which has pooled in the joints and becoming an acid which eats away at the connective tissue. So no, physical strain wont worsen someone's arthritis, trust me.

Sounds like an album title.
