Also, did Q3 have some sort of different lens flare code? Q3 doesn't seem to be able to render something like this:

Yea, looks like something from Unreal. It would be awesome to be able to use those kinds of flares for Q3.

It's interesting to see how the artists had focused on more of a Quake 1 theme in the test version of Quake 3 while in the release they went a completely different direction.
Also, awesome:

Yep. Flares were scheduled for the release build but cancelled because of render bugs. They do work in ioquake3 though: /r_flares 1

it was removed in one of the tests, much to my dismay.
about the same time they got rid of the colored railgunglows, i think (which, imo, is more a bug than deliberately removed)

i actually did load up the q3demo a couple years ago and found it really annoying. it's just different enough that it was a real pain in the ass to play. also, only about 3 maps.

Yeah me too. Came with a mouse ball cleaner and cardboard box? not sure I have those, though.

Not so long in history, but don't forget the hacked console maps that allowed pc-gamers to join/dominate the console kids

I saw the IHV footage quite some time ago and couldn't find it on youtube.
Now, someone made a new movie showing perhaps even more of this technology map:
IHV Leak Quake III Arena 1999
[Found this in a QuakeLive thread]

I still think many of the maps looked better in Q3's pre-alpha screenshots/videos.

I remember being really disappointed when the final game wasn't as Quake 1-ish as "advertised."

The plasma gun is still purple in the Q3 instruction manual
I remember running to the shops for additional memory so I could run Q3Test.
It's a shame how they didn't continue the gothic theme of the IHV in the final game.
There were a bunch of other cool things in the IHV and q3tests that were removed. The railtrail for example and the machinegun's barrels would rotate when shooting and there was a spark of electricity between the pointy bits of the lightning gun (I also remember you saw more of the LG than you do now).
The physics in Q3Test feel really odd as well when you're used to the current Q3 physics.
Oh yeah and that flamethrower never made it past the IHV either did it?
