Anybody running XP 64bit yet?

I'm getting a 64bit CPU in a couple of weeks, so I'm downloading the x64 edition as part of my MSDN subscription. Just wondering if I should expect shit dropping performance gains or what.

negative, i cant see it making that much difference?

The other software you use have to be 64bit too.

Supposedly 32-bit apps are supposed to run equally in the 64-bit edition. The only enhancement being, the ability to run 64-bit apps, and the increased memory limit.

only a moron would use 64 bit right now...

I happen to believe that it is NOT a good idea to switch to 64 bit until EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF SOFTWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER runs in 64 bit....otherwise it's useless.

but if no one switches then there is no market....

Only very, VERY few operations will increase performance, even when all software is 64bit optimized.

Adding additional wheels to a car will enable it to carry more load (RAM) but they won't make it faster.

I thought a lot of people here had AMD64s...

It depends what kind of system you have at the moment, even in 32bit mode an athlon 64 3400+ is quite a lot faster than an XP3200+ for example. But if you have a good computer at the moment then no, there is not much point in going 64 bit right now.

But to answer the original question, there wont be much difference atall as (and has alrady been said) there are no/very few true 64 bit applications about.

there are a few games that are for the 64
As it stands, there's a small list of games that take advantage of the 64-bit environment. Chronicles of Riddick and Shadow Ops are two that are available now. Both Ubisoft and Epic Games had said they'd have XP 64-bit versions of Far Cry and UT2K4 available in the first quarter, but neither have been released yet. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will ship optimized for 64-bit gaming. Both ATI and nVidia have 64-bit drivers available, but judging from Internet opinion, performance is a crapshoot.

What's the benefit to 64-bit besides greater precision and more capacity (such as RAM limits)? I cant see it speeding things up unless they use the extra decimal places in numbers to store more information, etc. but that would take intelligence to do, and many programmers out there just dont seem to have a clue...

You will be able to fetch a quad word from memory in one assembly language operation, IIRC. Currently 32-bit machines can fetch only a dword in one operation.

Copying memory, which is a thing games tend to do often, ought to be twice as fast with 64-bits processors (assuming the CPU can process those instructions as fast as their 32-bit counterparts).

EDIT: what fender said :)

i allready have run it, infact i got the CD sitting beside me.

i installed it when i first pieced my 64-bit system togeather.. And in the period of 3 hours, it crashed ~8 times, as well as the 32-bit/64-bit applecations where quite annoying, say to go to Newgrounds ( for instant ) it will prompt and say that you are not running a valid 32-bit blah blah blah, same with windows update etc..

when it gets smoothened out i will be happy, but for now, i will stilc with 32-bit windows untill 64 is more mainstream.

One (or more) of the tech sites ran a comparison of 32bit Windows + 32bit apps, 64bit Windows + 32bit apps, 64bit Windows + 64 bit apps.

I believe that 32+32 was as fast or faster in just about every test.

Plus, most hardware besides video cards doesn't have 64 bit drivers yet. Got a soundcard? Probably need to ditch that. Got a firewire/usb card? Probably have to ditch that too.

Right now, it's totally pointless and you will either lose hardware or performance...or both.
