Quake 3 Mapping Competition

NoGhost.net is hosting a Quake 3 mapping competition. Mappers from the community are encouraged to participate; veteran mappers and those looking to get into mapping are welcome to join in on the fun. Prizes will be awarded to the best maps and be judged by the community and players.
The contest will start on or around the last week of October and run for about 4-6 weeks (although final deadline is flexible depending on feedback). Judging will occur during the following 1 to 2 weeks. The official website will have more information as the start approaches.
AMD, ATI, and Sapphire have graciously agreed to sponsor this competition and have already donated some great prizes. Noghost.net is still looking for sponsors if anyone is interested.
Rules:
-The map should be able to hold at least 8 players suitable for 4v4 TDM/CTF or 8 players FFA or be a 1v1 map (although 1v1/tournament maps will be held to the same quality levels as more complex TDM/CTF maps)
-Doesn't necessarily have to support a specific gametype or mod, but you are welcome to specify one
-A majority of the map should be indoors
-Special prizes will be given out midway through the competition to the map with the best layout so far
-Map must be previously unreleased or a new design. Please no map remakes or edits.
-Map must contain sponsor images. Gotta show some thanks, right?
Judging:
-Will be done by a panel of experienced players who are familiar with that map's chosen audience (ie: a CPM map is judged by CPM players, a CTF map is judged by CTF players, etc)
-Scored on gameplay/design, overall looks, creativity, and layout

Awesome. I can already tell this competition is going to result in some really amazing maps. The advertising initially threw me off but I think it's for the greater good considering the motivation the prizes add.
Thanks for organizing this, I'm in

"A majority of the map should be indoors."
Could someone clarify the purpose of this rule for me? Also, what exactly constitutes an outdoor map? Surely Sock's
Pyramid of the Magician would be considered outdoors, but what about Hipshot's
Industrial? Technically this map is outdoors but it plays like any other indoor map.
Regardless, these are both wonderful levels and I'm not sure why we'd want to keep this competition from producing similar successes. Jukebox, think you could get back to me?
Thanks,

"-a majority of the map should be indoors, meaning: please no space maps"
Rule was updated on the main thread
Questions can be answered on the main post at

Mavrick the host of the competition updates and answers questions on those threads
GoodLuck mappers =)

Then why not just say no space maps?!
I'm thinking about posting my alpha at some point this week. How do mappers feel about giving feedback for maps they are competing against? I have no problem with this. It creates a fun and creative environment and everyone's map will be better because of it. Just wanted to see if I'll be getting any feedback before I release something to the public.

What's the reason for this rule?
-A majority of the map should be indoors
I'm temped to do something for this comp but I want to make some outdoor organic areas.

As it seems, it actually means "No Q3DM17-like space maps" and also likely "no heightmap terrain maps".
Maps like
this one are OK.

If I already work on a level - could I enter it?
edit: well, the level is previously unreleased and is a new design, so I guess it's alright...

I think Maverick may want to clarify that levels worked on prior to the contest won't be accepted. The map must be made specifically for the contest.

Damn it all to hell. I guess I won't enter then...
I can't produce a quality map on that short time w/o taking a leave from my work, or, well, quit and that's not really financially good... even if I for some reason would win...

It's a shame you may be unable to enter considering you may have made one of the best entries. Maybe you can talk to Maverick about this. He may have meant something other than what I interpreted his rules to mean.

Hipshot: How long has the map been worked on prior to this contest?

Well, about two weeks total time I guess, spanned over ~5 months...

I guess I probably shoulden't enter the level... would be nice just to get attention to it though, don't really care about winnings really, don't like ATi and or AMD either so...

Maverick ($0.75/slot Chicago game servers) says (8:12 PM):
I guess I don't see any harm in allowing that map in, but only if it has never been seen before.

I guess if he had never said anything otherwise we wouldn't have known anyway.

Are we allowed to post wip pictures of the map or should we keep the map secret until submission day?

As much as I think wip pictures would be a great feature I think Maverick wants to keep it secretive until the submission day. However, I will talk with him of this matter. Since so many new faces are taking part in this competition, we may be able to ignore the "secretive" rule and have more fun. Plus, it's good to get ideas from other players in my opinion. As long as nobody steals the wholeeee map haha. Plus, wip pictures would look better as the competition is being followed.
So.. Yeah. I'll definitely get a hold Maverick and discuss this matter.

I'm probably gonna skip this.
I would like to have the level in the contest, mostly for publicity, don't really care for the prizes, but I feel that I have been working on the level for a too long time, even if I'm allowed to enter, it's gonna be an awkward situation... Ofc, it's impossible to tell if others that enter haven't been working on thier levels for a long time too...

Your decision, obviously, but I want to encourage you to participate. It should be great fun. If you don't participate now, maybe you can in future contests?
I also want to re-paste the official MaverickServers website that holds all the contest information:

If anyone wishes to participate I encourage you to register at:

And why not start new map, just as it should be for competition

? Isn't it what's it all about, to make some NEW maps? Why everybody thinks just of posting old/partly or almost done maps? I'm participating in this competition, and I also have some old unfinished maps, but still I'm making entirely new map.

First, I want to welcome hipshot to the judges panel. It's excellent to have you on board.

Second, he wanted to submit a map he previously worked on because he doesn't currently have much time to work on mapping and he thought he may not have enough time to start over from scratch. But alas, he isn't participating anymore.

...and the winners are
