*cough* warcrime *cough*

Let August 6th forever be remembered as America's worst moment.

I find it completely amazing that neo-con idiots like John Bolton think that America is the only country that should have nukes. He and others like him are willingly stupid people.

I mean...America is the only country proven to have used them - on civilians - and will no doubt one day use them again. Why would anyone want a "rogue state" like that to have nukes after blasting civies into oblivion? :p

Not nearly as bad as the war crimes that Japan was committing (crimes for which they are largely unrepentant even today).

Actually, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were military targets.

Hiroshima was a large military center filled with tens of thousands of soldiers.

Nagasaki was an industrial center that was devoted to the manufacture of weapons.

Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were legitimate military targets, however, there was absolutely no need to drop nuclear weapons over them to end the war. The Japanese were defacto defeated in the Pacific. The bombs were dropped to demonstrate this new weapon, and to scare the Russians.

Defacto isn't the same as defeated. Ask some WWII vets how they feel about the bombs being dropped, and you'll be surprised at how many of them think that it saved their lives. I don't think that we should have dropped the bombs myself, but an invasion of Japan would likely have been the bloodiest in history.

I don't think an invasion of the main island would have been necessary, however Honshu would have been a terrible battle. There are of course two side to this coin, as how many Japanese civilians would have died if the US had decided to blockade the mainland and starve them into submission?

sigh

Japan didn't need to be invaded or bombed. If anyone has read a real history book the Japanese were fucked and trying to make a deal...and were ignored.

As to the cities being "legitimate military targets" that's a load of shit. The bombing planners admitted they wanted "virgin" targets with high population density. The first bomb drop was a calibration test as well as an experiment for the second bomb drop.

The only reason they were dropped was to prove a point. A point which ultimately killed 160,000 people.

FFS.

War is hell, good thing we have armchair cock jockey generals like GFY to give us WWII history lessons. Hindsight is 20/20 and its a real fucking shame GFY wasn't around to negotiate some sort of peace treaty when Japan was massacring civilians by the millions.

Japan (and Thailand) were responsible for over 17 million Chinese civilian deaths, around 4 million civilian deaths from the Dutch East Indies, one million Indochinese civilians, around 1.5 million British Indian civilian deaths and hundreds of thousands of Burmese, Malayan, Pacific etc. civilian deaths.

i think you're (intentionally?) confusing issues. i dont think gfy or most who argue that the bombs were not necessary are arguing that japan didn't commit those atrocities.
