Guess what I opened up today...

So, around 7, maybe 8 years ago, my friend bought

for me for my birthday. Well, at the time, the PC I had was absolute shit, and I couldn't even run it, so it stayed in the shrinkwrap. I thought I'd either return it, or get a better computer eventually and could run it then.
Well, I stayed with my Mac(s) for a few years. I'm not sure if

was ever released on Mac, but I never bothered installing it.
Then about 18 months ago I built this PC. By now, I had long forgotten that I owned a copy of

. Until recently when visiting my mom, I found it in my old closet. Still shrinkwrapped. So I brought it back, and today I opened and installed it.
I've briefly played parts of the game, only the first 1/2 or so. So this weekend will be my virgin

experience. Wish me luck.
P.S. Any

levels, add-ons, etc. I should check out once I play through it?

It's like a mini time capsule. I've heard Ground Zero (commercial expansion) is great :icon14:

I bought extremities a long time ago and it's dynamite...you get the eraser bot mod and many many popular mods plus a 64 map pack of the greatest maps ever done for q2...

You'll notice that after playing Q3 and other online FPS games of high-action, Q2 will be a piece of cake, especially once you know the levels. It's a lot harder if you try to be cautious....just go in guns blazing and you'll win no problem.
...actually never mind all that. Revel in the game experience for a classic game times.

Check out
ztn's maps for some quality DM. Q2 CTF kicks ass too, probably the best of the Quake series.

Still one of my all time favorites. Guaranteed to always be installed.

Oh man, I played VQ2 with the Eraser bot religiously for like a year before Q3 came out. Rarely got to play Q2 on LAN, but I smoked all my friends when I did get the chance.
edit: Or was it the Gladiator bot?

I wanted to try quake2 again...
I downloaded Quake II Advanced
http://www.q2players.org/q2advance/ and installed it but when I try to start it up I get a whitish grey screen that doesn't go away just hangs there and I have to ctrl + alt + del to get out of quake2.
It's a fresh install of quake2 full game with 3.20, I really want to try Quake II Advanced.
Quake2 runs fine but Quake II Advanced doesn't start up!
I have a 9700 PRO with 128Mb & 4.12 drivers but I'm sure that's not the problem because every other game I have runs with no flaws. Doom3, Resurrection of Evil, Steam HL2 / CSS, Pariah, Second Sight, etc..
Any suggestions?

If you had kept it shrink wrapped you might have been able to get a good price for it from some crazy collector

o'dium, I've been using

Evolved, but that looks different. Upcoming conversion? Entirely new textures it looks like. Neat.
BTW, I really do like the movement in

. It feels very free. The last time I played it was
at nVidia. I had a friend in high school whose dad worked there. Went in with them one day and got to play on some testing machines on one of the earlier nVidia cards. The game fucking blew me away. I just sat in the dark for like 5 minutes fireing the blaster away and watching it illuminate the walls. Good times.

Quake II Evolved is now using a Per Pixel Renderer, alowing us to have per pixel lighting and shadowing on everything in the world. The whole lighting system is unified, from the shadows of a brush, down to the angles of a normal mapped texture.
ATM, this version of Quake II Evolved is not released, its still work in progress, but everything is being remade now to take advantage of this technology. Even the barrels

Quake II sucked when it was new, I can't for the life of me imagine it's been getting any better with time.

i can't remeber, but i'm guessing if you can't get inside the containers (if there are any) it's not the way out.
Usually exits are lifts or buttons.
