IGN Hosting Shutdown

I know alot of people lurking at this forum may use PQ community sites for information, I strongly suggest everyone saves anything useful before it all goes away.
From this FAQ:
http://hosting.ign.com/faq.php
When is IGN hosting shutting down?
All hosting services will be shut down on
August 31, 2009.
Why is IGN shutting down hosting?
We're moving our datacenter and the hosting platform is not compatible. The cost and resources to upgrade it are not realistically possible in the timeframe we have available for the move, so unfortunately this has forced us to make this very tough decision.
Will IGN hosting return in the future?
At this time there are no plans to resume hosting services.
Can I pay to keep my IGN hosting?
Sorry, no hosting services, free or otherwise, will be offered.
Will I lose all of my site's content?
You will not lose any of your content unless you fail to make arrangements to move it prior to August 31, 2009.

It is probably worth mentioning that several people are already busy taking copies of various sites (Mostly Q1 related at the moment) and creating archives of them.

Not to alarm anyone, but Quake3World, owned by Gamespy, which is owned by IGN, which in turn is owned by Twentieth Century Fox, counts as an IGN hosted site. Initially we thought we would be impervious to these changes, but that may not be the case.
That said, Quake3World's admins have already mirrored the site's content. Prepare for the great exodus!
Discussion here (it turns to "ohoh..." on page 3):

Well, FileFront was saved, because it was "too big to fail (tm)" for the communities there. So we have to make q3w even bigger than it ever was. START POSTING SPAM'N'PORN! NOW!

Hmm... so potentially, this place could be dead before autumn?

IGN hosting this place will be dead, but it's quite easy to migrate everything onto our own server and we've already started doing that. DooMer is looking into the possibility of acquiring the domain.
Worst case scenario, we'll have the exact same looking site with a different domain. Best case scenario, you'll never notice anything happened, plus you won't see those banner ads anymore, plus we'll have more direct control of the site so we can post up articles, files, resources, etc.
I'll keep you guys updated.

I really, really hope that the domain can be intact. The current LD community for Q3 is too small and to wide spread right now and when/if QL becomes open for custom levels, this place could potentially become the largest resource in Q3 mapping - again. Being able to add articles and tutorials would be a very nice addition.
Yes, please keep us updated.
If a new name is required, QuakeLiveWorld could be nice?

I think a new domain that fully encapsulates everything id Tech related would be more suitable. The generational gap between engines isn't entirely exclusive so I think this community could do well supporting everything from Quake to Quake Live to Rage and beyond.

As a side note, I just found a whole folder on my hard drive of some really old notes that I've copied and archived locally from way back when (before the previous forum meltdown). A bunch of technical stuff I've written, interesting tidbits from some of the old-school members and some old beginner questions by me (found my 4th forum post and some really noobish questions - heh, I was already asking about optimizations).

Heh. I just got through moving my site to it's new domain and giving it a face lift, and found and added not only some Doom 2 maps (!) that I had forgotten about, but also a Q3 map conversion (split-and-mirrored-for-CTF pjw3dm2) that never actually got put up on my old site.
In addition, I added all of my Trackmania tracks to the site, which I couldn't do before since it had to be Quake-related.

(I don't want to derail, but if anyone here is into Trackmania, feel free to check out any of my stuff, and email me or comment on the track pages at TMX. I'm badly addicted to making tracks for that series of games.)
As far as a domain name goes, if we do have to move, I agree about changing it to something that would encompass any idTech game...not sure what that would be though.

You're old.
I remember playing some of your tracks. I'm not very good at driving in that game. I remember this massive one that you built and I kept sailing over the edge on the first turn. Never got to check out the rest of that track.
More on topic, it looks like ToddH is lobbying on our behalf. We'll see how that goes, but it sounds like IGN is pretty craptastic at replying to emails.

I just checked...it looks like
Answering email is incompatible with the new data centre. At this time we regretfully are not in a position to carry out the additional work needed to make answering email compatible.
Well. That explains it then.

And you dared linking to that site from
the Quake forum?

No, of course not. I'm a moderator; humor is foreign to me.

Lol, that's a great quote. But seriously, I never liked Q1. It got better over time, but when I first saw it I was disappointed with the SP gameplay. I never understood why they only used one color (brown) for everything in that game. More important: I was young, had lots of freetime and wanted Doom 3.
But ermm, yeah: there's lots of stupid things in those early readme files, that's why it says
WARNING: Taking the readme too serious may cause constant brain damage! next to the links to them.

But I wanted to keep them for their great quotes.
