So I'm thinking of getting FEAR (the first game on pc). Some searches on this forum didn't really do much for me, but i had some questions. Did you like the game? Is it worth getting? How's it compare to other horror titles? I realize FEAR 2 is coming out, but I won't be able to run it. Also, if I can run FEAR 1, will I be able to run Half-life 2? I've checked out the FEAR 1 demo, but it crashes after a certain point :/

My system specs suck (I'm on a laptop): Intel Core2Duo 1.8ghz, windows vista basic, 2.5gb RAM, and I have some sort of integrated graphics card chip set thing.

You're going to have to check and see exactly what kind of graphics chip you have, the rest of the specs sound fine, but it will hang heavily on your GPU.

FEAR is alright, it certainly has it's moments throughout the game and the plot is interesting enough to keep you absorbed in the gameplay. There are certain parts I hated (chasing the fat guy) but thankfully it doesn't affect the overall combat portion of the game.

Also check out the two expansion packs.

If you can run FEAR, you can definitely run HL2 as well.

Playing through FEAR was a good romp, but never really gets as "scary" as it pretends to be.
Just a solid shoot em up, but it doesn't hold a candle to HL2.
I was particularly disappointed by the limited amount of variation in enemies; You'll spend most of your time killing the same models over and over again.

Nevertheless I'm curious about FEAR2. I like how they incorporate mechs. I'm a whore for mechs.

And yeah, FEAR exceeds HL2 system requirements.

i'm expecting to be disappointed by fear2 since i'm anticipating some dumbing down of the AI and difficulty for the console crowd.

I thought it was a great game. It has plenty of creepy moments, mostly due to the atmosphere of the game.
I think you'll have trouble playing it with your graphics card, though... My specs were similar to yours, but I had a Radeon X600. It was unplayable for me until I got a geforce 7600.

You do need to connect to steam and make an account to install the games, but you don't need to connect online once they're installed. You can choose to launch the games in offline mode if you want.

fear is a lot better than half life 2 imo. HL2 was just following the path and pointing and clicking at enemies. almost all the fights were dull. fear's combat is one of the best in first person shooting.

which game's story you like is up to you, but i didn't care for either of them

half life 2 has a slight puzzle-solving adventure component that is really weak and that i found extremely boring.

there's alot more to be said about HL2 and what it offers as a game compared to FEAR...I mean honestly are you a moron?

actual fighting gameplay and suspense: FEAR > hl2

locations and characters: hl2 > FEAR

atmosphere and story: hard to say, they are quite different, comparing apples to oranges

I'm a big fan of Monolith, I enjoyed FEAR a lot. Also Tron 2.0 was great and Condemned: Criminal Origins was excellent, I can strongly recommend them.

nothing related to gameplay... most of which is following a path through some empty lands without any engaging combat... yeah it's immersive, but i didn't care much for being immersed in that world

True, the HL world is pretty boring, and the combat is pretty weak. FEAR is boring as fuck to look at though. Hey look, concrete.

I never really thought about it until now.

I remember when games put you in some mysterious persons shoes, and you were that person and you develop the character with your actions. Games were better.

It's not that it's a boring world, it's just that the combat feels hollow like tin, the enemy AI is beyond stupid and is not at all fun, Gordan Freeman is a faggot, and I don't care about any of the characters. And what the fuck is up with the annoying vortigaunts? Did George Lucas make this game?
