additional alpha-channels

ppl, pls help me! 
im tryin to add alpha-channels to old (pre-existin) textures...
how does that work?
I could add one, but i could safe the pic as TIF/PSD only (32bit).
Saved as TGA it aint workin in Quake3 ...the texture is not displayed in-game.
