You might want to update your Quake 3:A, gives a lot more servers ;)

Err...Yeah. :paranoid: .. Its still a good game though. Anyway, you can change your data transfer speed on setup, system, network, and you can change it to (slowest) 33,6k, [<= 28,84] 56k, IDSN, LAN/CABLE/XDSL (fastest). you want to use 33,6k and <= 28,84 for dial-up, 56k for LAN (particularly wireless and over the mains) and then LAN/CABLE/XDSL go to their respective speeds. Also, you can change where you are searching for games, you can look for games on local, Mplayer,Internet and Favorites. If you click on specify, you can type the IP address of the server/whoever the hell you want to do one-on-one with.

(If you are running mac or [linux], do not pay any attention to the following paragraph.)
If none of above helps, it is probably your anti-virus software, particularly McAfee. If it is going into multilayer, but then Quake 3 freezes, and the mouse cursor defaults to windows, press alt F4 again and Again until it closes Q3, or you can hit the windows key and then Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Then, after you have done that, may see an anti-virus software dialogue box
that will say somthing like: 'program 'Quake 3 Arena' requests internet access. Just set it to allow q3 and if you can. go onto anti-virus config and let it allow every multiplayer game you have.

Oh by the way i go as mcelf on q3a.

Find a closer server or get a faster internet connection.

wurd... there are a few settings you can tweak to maybe achieve a little better performance, don't think they will drop a 200 or so ping down to double digits though, they are called "tweaks" for a reason.
