well guess what, an HMO's bottom line is the bottom line, not your health. this comprises reasons #1 thru #99 for having universal healthcare, provided you're willing to foot the tax bill, of course

I don't think anyone who has an ounce of humanity remaining in them would bat an eyelash.

This case is indeed tragic but to me it brings to light the never ending increase in costs to make people live that they would have died of in the past.
First of all I believe health care should not be for profit.
Unfortunately as medical technology improves more and more things you should, and have before, died of you can now be treated and cured of but the cost gets higher and higher. There comes a point where some of us can afford near immortality and some will be too poor for these miracles.
The question is: What are we going to do then? Let the rich choose themselves for the best medicine? Have some contributions to mankind means test for everyone to see to what degree your life is sustained?

What? Medicine, medical technology, etc. is going to get less and less expensive as the technology used today is trivialized by the advances of tomorrow.
And saying "near immortality" is quite a stretch, don't you think? From death at 30 in the middle ages to death at 70 today does not an immortal make.

Actualy to get some of the est treatments, like operations. People are leaving US and having the opeation in places like India where it can be up to 80% cheaper.
Or you could come to Canada or Norway, become a citizen, and not pay a cent.

Yes, and the quality can be quite high, but often there's little recourse for poor medical outcomes due to human error.
Still an appealing alternative.

I've addressed this above.

I feel sorry for the family. I can't imagine living in a developed nation and have to deal with the absolute failure of a health care system.

The point is that you spend your life paying dearly into a system to protect you only to have the system decide your life isn't worth $75,000... A sum that most people can't pay on their own, but collectively only costs 75,000 people a dollar. Considering my premiums are over $300 a month, I wonder why my dollar wasn't good enough for that girl.
I guess I should consider myself lucky. I work for the state government which affords me one of the best health care plans available, and I pay nothing out of pocket month since it is part of my benefit package. My boss asked me the other day at our little holiday party what I thought of the presidential election, and I told her time has come to tear this fucker down or leave.

Geragos is a good lawyer, they'll get a settlement, but they can't get their daughter back. It's very sad.

On the other hand we must not forget the fact that it is, if not in all aspects, also abused in combination with chemical additives by evil merchants like virus & anti-virus conspiracy on Internet.

It doesn't matter, I suspect non-preventative measures will continue to eat a larger portion of said pie right up to the point at which medical technology facilitates indefinite lifespans. Assuming individuals continue to insist on living as long as medically possible.

Hmm. She was immunosuppressed because of the bone marrow transplant, liver failure was likely either due to antibiotics or immunosuppressants, and she would have required more of both to survive a liver transplant. Plus, donor livers don't grow on trees. I expect she would have dies on the transplant list either way; plus these sorts of treatments are much less available in countries other than the US.
Then again, insurance companies refusing to pay up for e.g. diabetes is pernicious.
