I have recently figured out how to make a realistic painted surface on non painted surfaces such as wood, metal and concrete. Here is a preview of what we are going to do:

Good stuff... I have a different technique, but I'll try this out sometime next week as I'm currently working on a lot of painted metals, bricks, etc. so this will come in handy.
I suggest you also post this at pixelmorgue.com if you haven't done so already. I'm sure they would appreciate the tutorial.

Not exactly an A, B, C method like your's, more like some painting with a stylus, then with different layered blend modes. The process varies depending on the surface and effect I want to do.

Very excellent tutorial. Makes it seem like that was the way it was meant to be done.

Yea, nice one. The result is pretty neat, I did a quick try just to see some fast results and I think I'm gonna use this meth on some wooden ceilings in my history level.
Untouched and the exact same with your paint job.
Last year, I did some weapon plats, still using the same one, I aimed for "painted" wood too, didn't really put my heart into it so the raw texture looks pretty "clean", I might redo those plats, but I'm not sure, the look good in q3 already when scaled down once.
My weapon plat.
