vertex paint on models for alpha blending

Has anyone worked with using vertex paint to get alphaMod-like texture blending to work with Q3?

I have a model created in 3ds Max, vertex painted, exported to ASE with an attached vertex blend shader.

The model refuses to blend unless I drop in alphaMod volume brushes.

I've followed these tutorials to no avail:

Nevermind. Native Q3Map2 doesn't support it. I'll have to settle for alphaVolume brushes or Q3Map2_fs.

Ah.. yes, no vertex blender (oops I mean "blending") with default Q3Map2 you have to use that UrBan Terror version of it
