I'm pretty much decided against the Core 360, so it's a tossup between the Premium / Elite / Halo 3 SE console. It's going to a SD CRT, so HDMI is a nonissue (though I think the new ones come with it these days anyways). Leaning towards getting the Halo 3 console, since I kinda like the green and the rechargeable battery pack is included for $20 more (seriously, AA batteries?).

Anyways, what games/accessories should I pick up? I hear Gears of War is pretty decent. Also, has anyone had to deal with the MS customer support regarding the Red Ring of Death nonsense?

My favorites have been Gears of War,... um.... and some arcade games.... and halo 3 mp beta but you can't get that.
Haven't played bioshock but everyone seems to love it so definitly that one!

There are threads here about the red ring, there is a long thread about microsofts new 3 year warranty and lots and lots of threads about games - check those and you'll find a bit of detailed info regarding those questions. Bioshock is the current one that everyone is hyped up about. Gears is good. Co-op gears is great, MP deathmatch gears isn't. Rainbow 6 vegas starts a bit slow but gets very good.

The automated menu system is voice recognition based and annoying as hell. I eventually just started yelling at it until it connected me to a person... who was in fucking India.
2nd time I called in, I got to talk to people that spoke English, which was nice. However, now they can't verify my serial number, so I have no way to track my repair online. I should be getting it back next week, though. Total turnaround should be about 4 weeks.

My one and only experience with Gears of War.. using the free one month of Live that came with the system.. said Hey (or something similar) at the beginning of a multiplayer game and all the 14 year old tards went nuts.

Make sure the manufacture date of the console you get is from mid '07. If it's an Elite, it's a nonissue. If it's a Pro, that's how you avoid the red ring problem.

No, Just forza 2 and dead rising.

Dead Rising is indeed the dog's danglies, and I'd go so far as to say it's my favourite full price game on the 360.

If you can handle the trippy visuals, Space Giraffe is utterly fucking stupendous with fantastic depth of gameplay. It can just be hard to make out what's going on at some points, but the visual and audio cues are all there, it just takes some adjusting to.
But I'm a Llamasoft fan.

Dead Rising, Crackdown, Oblivion, Forza 2, Bioshock. Gears of War is a bit meh if you're not into rampant homoeroticism and lousy AI. Saints Row was poo.

P.S. ignore Soap, he likes WoW and thinks the N-Gage was a good phone...

no. i cant stress enough if you're worried about RROD problems, wait. the new falcon chips will be out soon and they'll deal with the overheating issue. The current 'fix' is just to add another heatsink and to be honest it hasn't been proven to work yet. i wouldn't be surprised if a year from now all these dual heatsink 360's start to die.

personally i'm still on my first 360 for the past year+ and haven't had a single issue, but so many people love to bitch about RROD that you mine as well just wait to avoid the whole situation.

I thought the graphics in Just Cause looked like dated PS2 graphics. The skydiving was cool though. You should be ashamed of your opinion of Dead Rising though, it's a great game (FOR SHAME!!!).

Gears of War is a must buy. It has the trifecta of a great story, great co-op, and great MP.
Bioshock is also a must buy.

Madden has sucked since ESPN (2K3 or w/e) came out, nothing could compair and madden is always just recycled bullshit.
GoW was fun ONCE through SP on each difficulty, multi is nothing more than a bunch of windowlickers thinking that shit is skill, its not.
COD 3 was "meh" at best
Just cause, was alright actually, but not a system seller by any means.

Dead rising was fantastic. Sorry you couldnt handle it.
