Do you take your computer skills for granted?

I do on occasion, when I come across some n00bs that have NO idea how computers work or how to use them.
lol, you want to shout at them, "It's fucking WINDOWS!!!! How hard can it be man?!!", but one must realize, that even windows is a trip for someone who's never really used it.
At times like that I like to think back to say, the very first time I used XP after using win98. It wasn't 'hard', I just couldnt' find anything! They moved everything around and made me feel like a fucking retard trying to find simple options and settings.
It's pretty humbling to think of that moment, when a user says to me, "What's a firewall? No, I dont' have any antivirus software."
Let's me just smile and say, "Let's get you fixed up."
You guys? I knwo you all know what I'm talking about, the day you solve ONE problem for a friend or family member you become the never ending tech support.

Yes I get impatient with ppl that don't know about computers all the time. But I have leaned to calm down a bit.
I even called my Sister and idiot once because it too two hours to teach her how to write in an web address.
Now anyone here would have a problem with that.

.
I think I'd get pissed too.
I only get annoyed when users play dumb and don't TRY to learn. They act dumb to get you do it FOR them. Only that pisses me off.
MY dad does that all the time. :/

I used to be the computer geek fix-it guy, but I cant stand that anymore and dont fix or set up anything for anybody unless it's my family or something that I'll be using.

I used to do the same thing, but when the one little thing goes wrong 6 months from now you get blamed and you can't defend yourself because they have no clue what's going on.

I tell everyone who places 'blame' on a computer problem, that they can no longer phone me for help. I'M the one doing the favor, so fuck'em if they can't be patient and understanding.

Same here. Networks are fun but home systems are enough to drive a geek nuts.

Goddamnit I hate that...
It's worse because I know fuckall about hardware (well, fuckall to me, when comparing to a techsavvy community like Q3W, is a goldmine to them).

yeah, I guess, until I tell somebody I popped a new cd writer into my computer and they look at me like I'm a genius. They don't realize how easy it really is.
We have all macs at work and I do a lot of work on them, my nerdiness saves the bosses a lot of money.

there are different levels of helping folks - unless it's a rare thing that's happened, i'll teach someone how to solve the problem rather than just fix it for them. if they start being a cock about it then i'll fix the problem for them and ask for payment or pass it on to a mate that fixes computers for a living and let him sting them rotten.

My Dad's a complete nubbin when it comes to computers, but he's prepared to listen to every little detail I tell him, so as long as I keep it simple, I can solve most problems for him.
However, much like Ax's complaint, he's always calling his hard disk his "Memory".
And because his only home-computing experience before owning a PC was using a Sinclair Spectrum, he's constantly worried about using up his "memory".
I keep telling him that word processing documents are NOT going to fill up his 40GB hard disk anytime soon, but he's still slavishly obsessed with deleting files or backing them up on to CD as soon as he's finished with them.
Good in a way, but more than a little frustrating.
