my top three abominations are:

#1: Counter-Strike: Condition Zero - the sucktacular aspect of this game isn't that it looks crappy (it ran on the old goldsource engine after all), but that it played as if it were thrown together in a matter of days by trained monkeys. took the concept of 'bad guy around every corner' to the next level



#2: Soldier of Fortune 2 - if they'd given you a choice between stealth and a shooting match, this might have made a decent game instead of long drawn-out reload-fest. never in the history of gaming has it taken so long to do so little



#3: this is really a toss-up between Pariah and Doom 3. Pariah made great use of the UT2 engine in the outdoor areas but then fucked it up with some less than riveting setpieces and retarded npc characters. Doom 3 also had great tech but wasted it on a predictable room-corridor-room-rinse-repeat concept set in semi-darkness and garnished with every cliche in the book

i couldn't find any screencaps that fully encapsulated the epic failure of these two games

p.s. why only FPS games? basically for comparison's sake. duke nukem: manhattan project vs MS train simulator = apples vs oranges

Being completely honest, no pre-formed bias, not giving into the negative hype and years of legendary ranting -- Daikatana has to be the worst fps I have ever played.

I don't know how it ended up after it was patched a few times, but the game, as it shipped, is devastatingly bad. I do appreciate the art direction and feeling of the game, but like... man, I don't know where to start. It's ridiculously difficult, for one. No quicksave. Horrible, annoying sounds at times... It just kills your patience to grind through even the first couple of levels.

I never suffered Daikatana (thankfully by the sounds of it). For least enjoyment I'd have to say the CoD 2 demo...fickle I know judging a game by the demo, but I just saw nothing in it.

Played some of the demo of Call of Juarez. Shite.

I played the WarRock beta last year. Utter tripe.

Oh and Doom 3 is superb.

Have to agree that doom3 ( and quake 4) were great single player FPS games. I loved playing them both. If id produce their next fps only as good as those I'd be happy. I still think id make the best fps games.

Any reason you skipped #2? 1, 3, 4...?
Shadowrun is pretty shitty.
I enjoyed Doom3, but only made it about half way through Q4 before quitting.

I think Q4's singleplayer is only worth playing once. The ending is so plain and boring that it leaves you with a "huh so that's it" feeling. After a year, I have no intention of reinstalling it whereas I've always loved Doom 3.

When I first played doom3, I actually remember being too chicken shit and quitting the game when I first knew I was going into a dark area to encounter monsters, particularly after reading all the hype and other players experiences of the game After getting used to it, it was awesome. When you chose your saved game to load, the screen would fade away in that creepy way, and I liked the loading screens too with the information about each new area you were going to. Really increased the atmosphere. By comparison, prey isnt quite pulling me in with the same sense of 'let's see what's next', hence , I've hardly played much of prey so far. But anyway, this is all a bit off topic.

I haven't played many, so I don't have much input on-topic...

but I did buy doom3 for xbox (never played on pc), and couldn't get into it. Combination of dull game and trying to FPS with a controller = I played it for about an hour and haven't tried again.

Prey was awesome IMO. It was pretty fucking creative how you ended up shooting your girlfriend in the head instead of the classic "save the world and the girl" ending. Plus Cherokees kick ass.

I couldn't put it down until I beat it. The puzzles were excellent and the difficulty was overall challenging enough to be entertaining and sometimes even frustrating.

The multitude at which this game sucks is beyond description. Here are just a sample of what's wrong with this game.

Graphics: The game looks like a really poorly done UT engine game but with some serious flaws. Decals for instance, which should be rendered just above the base layer are instead rendered what appears to be about a foot off the surface. So blood splatters seem to float a foot off the ground.

Gameplay: There is none. Just shoot everything that moves. Worst part, since it features both singleplayer and multiplayer, instead of making separate maps, all the singleplayer maps are the same as the multiplayer maps. All maps are perfectly mirrored and colour coded in red and blue for CTF play. So playing through the single player mission, you start on one end (red base), play to the middle and then basically play the exact same thing in reverse to the other end of the map (blue base). So in singleplayer once you reach the middle, there's nothing new in the second half and you already know where all the monsters are.

Plot: Since I highly recommend that you don't play this game, I don't mind spoiling the plot. You start off as a soldier going into a training simulator but something goes wrong and a terrorist organization hijacks it while you're inside and you have to fight your way out. In the end, you pop out of the simulator and it's just, "Oh, congrats... that was all part of the simulation, that terrorist stuff was all part of the training. Have a nice day." After actually playing through such a shitty game, they even deny me the satisfaction of victory at the end.

So shitty.


Number 2 would probably be Unreal 2. I also played the demo of UberSoldier (my brother sent it to me thinking it was a sequel to RTCW, lol) and it was so bad, I didn't even bother finishing the demo.

hah, the worst fps I ever played was an alpha that a friend of mine was working on for a startup company. They'd been working on it for a year by then but I couldn't see what they'd done on it. The enemies just stood there and let you shoot them, no attempts to dodge around, textures totally blah, slow. God it was a mess. I would hope if I worked on a game level for a year it would be better than that. They actually got an offer to develop games for an huge company but they declined cause they wanted to make their own game, that's when my friend quit them.

Kreed was spectacularly bad.
I would also say Breed, but that had some redeeming features. It was basiclly unfinished, but some of the ideas were cool.

I'd put my vote on Unreal 2 or Pariah. Horrible, dull shitfests both of them.
