Positive test for steroids.
I guess some people can't grow old gracefully. Has he shown his face in public yet, said anything about this?

I've heard rumours that some of the other Gracie's might be trying to cheat as well. Anyone know anything about that?

yea this was months ago - discovered after his fight vs sakuraba. gracie's nandrolone leves were 40 times the normal amount. his response was outright denial. Not sure if he's changed his tune over the last couple months.
sherk & franca both tested positive also, after they fought each other recently.

Yeah, that must be it. Just look at that 'roid freak Helio Gracie.
This is somewhat old news, and the only debate I've heard about it was something about naturally occurring levels of substances that cause a false positive result. This can happen(I've been told) in athletes with extremely rigorous conditioning regimens. Sean Sherk is an example, he also just popped positive. He has a fucking SICK training routine, he trains like he's headed to a PRIDE fight. His levels were something like 3 to 5 times above the minimum to cause a positive result and Royce's were something like 50 times higher. So yeah, I'd say he was doing them. His manager (he's one of my instructors) hasn't said anything about it at the dojo, but another instructor said that if he was taking steroids, they were some damn shitty ones.
edit: damnit Jules.

I'd have to add that I wouldn't really be surprised if Royce was doing steroids. After Matt Hughes handed him his ass he had to be under an enormous amount of pressure. The Gracies all walk around with bullseyes on their backs, everyone that trains jiu-jitsu would love to be able to say that they tapped out a member of the first family of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
I guess you could characterize it as failing to grow old gracefully, or it could be just a case of someone trying to bear up under the pressure of holding up the family's honor.
I don't know, it's all speculation on my part. I don't know Royce, but I train with a bunch of guys that are friends with him and some of the other Gracies.

Could be. A little foresight on his part and he'd realize that getting caught juicing would probably hurt the family honour more than losing though.
It's a shame because he was a truly great fighter.

It's odd that Randy Couture (44) is so successful and yet Royce (40) seems to be struggling. Royce is pretty much a health nut (as Couture is) practices the Gracie diet, and has legendary endurance. His first fight against Sakuraba lasted NINETY MINUTES.
It's probably a lot more complex than I'd imagine, it can't just be a case of Royce getting old.

When I watched the last sherk fight we were all standing with our draws dropped going holy hell this dude is a ball of muscle... but now I know why

It's not like the guy has been a juice freak for the past 20 years. Take a look at him, you'd think he'd never touched a weight let alone done any juice in his life. He's been training and fighting for how many years? I bet his body is fucked. The guy's probably done one small 12 week cycle to help his body recover at a faster rate than normal. Obviously he wasn't doing it for muscle and power as his physique has been puny forever.
The people trying to say he's a cheat and how they knew he must have been cheating somehow are just ignorant morons. Whatever cycle(s) he's done have done nothing to add to his fighting ability. It blows me away how ignorant people can be to immediately say he's a fraud and it's all the roids when they hear something like this. I bet he's physically exactly the same now as he was pre-cycle.

According to my instructors (I haven't seen Royce at all recently) he is a fair bit bigger. Not massive by any means, but larger than he was. No, I don't think that the 'roids would have anything at all to do with his fighting ability, and as I said, his conditioning is already fucking legendary.
