You know with the usb flash drives, it puts that icon down by the clock. Is it really important to do that safely remove hardware thing?
What would happen if you didnt and just unplugged it?

You could lose/dammage the data that was written in the session that it was plugged in for.

depends on how old the hardware is, fucky.
it's not wise to do it, let's just leave it at that.

I used to right-click the icon then select the right object and click 'stop'. Then I realised that you can just left-click the icon once and you get a 1-click menu to stop devices.
I still pull the drives out if it says 'this device cannot be stopped right now', which is dumb but hasn't caused me any problems to date.

I had my son show me that one a month or two ago as well. DOH! I didn't realise it either.
