from what i hear there aren't a lot of changes this time around in Photoshop. i think the biggest change is the new File Browser, which has links to stock photography by photographers around the world.

i may have to download a trial to see what the fuss is all about.

yeah, I think the to big changes are the Adobe Bridge control centre, which looks like it might be good for our work flow and version cue has had a polish up. There are a few new tools, but not a great deal more.

No doubt Rep will know all about it, even might of made some of the tools.

if that's the case, i think i'll stick with my copy of Photoshop CS.

the package you got came with Illustrator CS2, right? have you had a chance to look at the differences there? I'm still pondering whether or not to buy the update at my school's bookstore. gotta milk my student id discount as long as i can.

No, I quit the ASN when I realized that this CS business was a slap in the face of people who have been using Photoshop since the early days.

In my opinion, which is for some reason your job to debate, 7.0 was Photoshop's ultimate release. If the image resampling is as good as they claim in CS2, then more power to them. If Photoshop 7.0 had nested layer groups, it would be perfect.

I've yet to see the spot healing brush in action, and I'm curious if it can outdo the patch tool. Jesus, they're advertising red eye correction? What is this, Kai's PowerGoo from 1998?

Basically, CS and CS2 look like attempts at changing things that were already well known and established... Much like 5.0, which was negligibly better than 4.0, but managed to change a shitload of things around (Including the much whined about layer->free transform to edit->free transform change), CS and CS2 are adding features long available through third party plug-ins (RAW support, noise reduction, red eye correction, as examples) and changing things like the filter menu into the god awful filter gallery or whatever they called it in CS. They must have realized around 7.0 that there wasn't much more they could improve on in the time being, so they'd better just change everything and add previously third party plug-ins so they could make the sales to keep the company alive.

My wishlist for 10.0 and beyond:

1. More intuitive masking tools. (See: Corel KnockOut)
2. Interactive color mixer (See: Corel Painter)
3. Particle effects to replace a lot of filters (lens flare, clouds, any diffuse or painterly effects. A particle system would work better in a lot of cases.)
4. No more retarded brushes. Who wants a fucking paintbrush that lays down footprints? Hire professionals to create sets.
5. Painter-like brush/paint attributes.
6. Auto-slice
7. Integrate ImageReady into Photoshop with a toggle... (Instead of loading a completely native program, pressing a button or menu item such as File->ImageReady adds the proper GUI elements. Fireworks MX already has a similar interface and it's not too intrusive.
8. Nested styles on a single layer. (Realistic shadows come from multiple sources. Let's use a basketball for example. On the court, a basketball typically has three shadows hitting the ground. If you want to do a simple shadow with layer styles instead of painting it yourself on it's own layer, you can just do one drop shadow. Adding the ability to nest multiple layer styles would be nice, so instead of having 4 layers for one effect, you can do it in one. Also, adding a perspective and gradiant value to the drop shadow would make it more valuable.)
9. FTP features in the file browser. (Perhaps CS2 has this already? It'd be nice.)

Edit: Illustrator CS2 looks hot so far. Live Trace, the control palette, custom workspaces (about time). If the Live Trace feature is good enough (have to see it first), I'll upgrade that puppy.
