Wireless Problems

Have a Dlink router [wireless] and a computer a few rooms away from it with a wireless adapter.
In the taskbar it shows Excellent strength, but limited or no connectivity.
I have rebooted the modem, the rouiter and the computer several times with no luck.
It just keeps giving the computer a 169.000.000.000 address.
Oh, and sometimes when I click view available wireless networks it doesnt even show mine in the list, but shows 6 or 7 from nearby houses.
What kinds of things should I be looking for when it says the signal strngth is excellent.
Windows XP media center OS.

first of all, update the firmware on the router but do not do it wirelessly. second, are any of the 6 or 7 nearby networks open? if so, does your nic have a problem getting a proper IP address from them?

I can connect to one of the Unsecured wireless networks in the neighborhood. JUst not to mine. I have reset the router and all that, but still no luck.
THink it might be the router?

sounds like it. again, i would start by upgrading the firmware then do NOT secure it, leave it open, then try and see if the router will dish DHCP (give you a proper IP addy).

This is a computer I got from someone and I noticed it has a bunch of UNIX and Netware stuff installed within Network Connections.
Could this affect anything? I Unchecked all that stuff, but I dont know if I have to click the remove or should I go through add/remove programs to uninstall it.
Not Unix but IPX and crap like that...also has SAP.
How do I get rid of all this stuff?

oh boy. uninstall what you don't use then, but i doubt that's doing it. did you update the firmware or what? quit sidetracking.
