Damien Hirst, former BritArt bad boy whose works infuriate and inspire in equal measure, did it again on Friday with a diamond-encrusted platinum cast of a human skull priced at a cool $98 million.
The skull, cast from a 35-year-old 18th-century European male, is coated with 8,601 diamonds, including a large pink diamond worth more than $8 million in the center of its forehead.

yeah, just saw that on BBC world news feed an hour or so ago.
i suppose its cool and all... if you like blood diamonds.
personally i think it would look cooler if it was just dipped in platinum. tell people it's the skull of the silver surfer or some shit.

I realize that, but the whole skull should be real. And those are some nice looking 18th century teeth.

yeah, i would have prefered if the bone was encased inside; and i'm sure they did some dentistry on the teeth; they're a bit too pretty for a brit from any period.

I love Hirst's work. One of my all time favorite Artists.... him and maybe Orlan are the two contemporary artists I find truely inspriing. :icon14:

so you actually see some sort of meaning in a skull made of diamonds?
the only meaning i can see rhymes with ground pearling.

HIrst is an untalented, money driven fuck.
The only artists in public eye that I give the time of day are the Chapmans and sometimes Gormley. I also tolerate Emin because I feel sorry for, but that doesn't stop her work being crap.
That said, it's quita a cool looking skull. Nothing more than that though.

Have you ever wondered why our species likes things that are shiny? I mean, whats the big deal about a rock that makes a twinkle? I never really could understand it...

Give me a skull, a bedazzler, and about 5 minutes and I'll make you one just like it on the cheap.

While I'm sure the craftsmanship that went into making this.....thing...is impressive I have to say I've always been mystified with people's facinations with jewelry and shiny things.
Mr.T....if you're reading this...you're a goddamed fag.
