I'm trying to set up my footer so it follows the last line of text in my paper. If I do what MS help suggests by moving the arrow up on the margin to where the text is, it does it for all the other pages and destroys the formatting. How the fuck are you supposed to do this?

normally I wouldn't fucking bother with this but I'm trying to create a template.

it's probably asking for trouble with word, but could you use a table with the last row/cell reserved for your footer?

That would fuck everything else sadly, as then each page of text would have to be individually located in its own cell.

I bet you could manage some incredibly ugly solution by using some VB script that, when printing, would modify the footer height.

I have no idea what vb is or how to use it, I'm just supposed to do this for journalism.

You want something to appear immediately after the last line of text on every page, and not at the actual bottom of the page?

I'm not sure a footer is the best thing to use for that.

What exactly are you putting there?

no, not on every last line of text, just the very last page I want the footer to hug the text.

You don't get to decide anything, The Word does as it pleases.

no, not on every last line of text, just the very last page I want the footer to hug the text.

You shouldn't have to make it a footer then. You should be able to just insert what you need.

Are you trying to put an auto-field like a page number or date or something there?

All pages after the first should have a page number header along with my last name & name of the article. The footer of each page except the last should have --MORE--, and the last page should say --30-- right after the text.

Wouldn't it be easier to set the footers up for the first page + each additional page as you want them then manually add --30-- on the last page?

dont use a footer, use a footnote.

edit: oh if its about page numbers and you want different numbers and page layouts per "section" then footers will work if you use "section break - new page" and then format the footer for each section. I use this for reports for example where the front page has no page number and different margins to the rest of the document, then the following pages have roman numerals - then teh body of the report has arabic numerals.

once youve created ur sections, open the header footer toolbar and set it so that each section does not copy the header footer from the previous section - then you can set up the page parameters differently for each section.
