Didn't account for my wife's wages going up due to her new position and - wages went up 8,000 since last year, but they were still low enough that not a lot of federal tax was withheld, which means I have to send the fucking IRS a check for $860.

Where's this republican tax cut I've heard so much about?

The way it works out, the only way I could have avoided this was by having my wife have them take an additional $25 a month out of her check for the entire year. Sucks too, because I usually keep a close eye on these things and end up either getting something back or almost breaking even.

2700 For years we had to pay back up to that amount or more. That really sucks.

unless you're already rich you won't be seeing extra money from taxes this year it seems.

this year i got about $11 back from federal taxes which is bullshit considering i dont claim en exemptions and i made about 2x more this year round than the last. usually the federal return is my big one but it sure as hell wasn't this year.

i got about $200 back from state which was another shock cuz usually my state tax is lower than the federal :icon27:

I try and set and adjust my witholding every year so that I am getting less than 300 back or paying less than 300 in.

I can't stand letting the gov use my money interest free.

I usually do mine on the 14th so I don't know what the verdict is yet.

I will have to pay around $2000 this year. I will let you know tomorrow when I get back from having them done.

I understand your antipathy towards all things not peaceful, and could maybe see that opinion under certain regimes or administrations, but as a blanked policy I think that's a bit extreme. Or do you think that there are no valid reasons for a military to exist in this world? Or is this particular opinion just for the Canadian military? In all seriousness, what is the Canadian's military's annual budget roughly?

once again it hits me that I'm graduating (college) in 3 weeks, looking at a decent paycheck and have absolutely no idea how to manage my money. Suggestions from those with experience? Any decent books / resources on this stuff for an engineer?

edit: I think I'll fall in this high tax bracket... what is it now, 28%?

Honestly, I'm not opposed to having a truly defensive military which exists to protect borders and help in times of crisis.

Canada is spending about $11 billion U.S. a year on the military right now. I'm not sure if that includes the tab for our presence in Afghanistan. We're around 10th in the world in military spending. Simply, I don't want to pay for foreign wars. Too many innocent people die.

although i did notice they lowered the low income credit to 12K; so apparently they want to offset corporate tax breaks by squeasing more cash from the poor. gg.

oh, and in answer to the question at hand... between state and federal i got $1600 back. so i'm getting a new pc.

Both are returns at least though.

I lost my state rebate last year because I listed the amount of sales tax I owed on internet purchases outside the state. Complete stupidity on that one.
