Ok here's the deal: I hate this job. I've been here six months now and I've found that it blows and I want to leave. I need to stay here in Charlotte so my wife can finish school, and I just got an email from my former university about an upcoming career fair. Along with it was a large list of companies that are hiring and one of them was Chip Ganassi Racing. (http://www.chipganassiracing.com)
Now, I fucking HATE NASCAR, but I do love racing and Ganassi also runs IRL and Rolex sports car teams. So my question is: Should I put in my resume knowing that the best option for me would be the NASCAR team?

sure why not.
a job is a job, whether is says Nascar or Ecoil on the front door really shouldnt matter that much (as long as its in the same field of expertise)

Of course you should, it'll look great on your resume when you apply for that job you really want in a few years.

I found out last night that one of the guys in my jiu-jitsu class is a vehicle dynamics engineer for Jeff Gordon's team. The stuff he does sounded rather cool, and he said he's not a NASTARD fan and he hates rednecks.

Yeesh, where to start? First off, it's NOT what I was led to believe it was. I'm basically being used as a technician, checking out, setting up, and debugging a number of identical machines. FUCKING BORING.
Secondly, I've spoken with all the EEs here, and every project is a variation on the machines I'm working with now. Take a widget from one place, do some sort of process on it, move it somewhere else. ZZZZZZZZZ.
Lastly, they're cheapskates here and every engineer here that I speak to on a regular basis is looking for another job.

No matter what you think of NASCAR, it's a huge organization that not only has tons of money to spend (i.e. all the teams involved do too), but also has tons of contacts with other industries.

If your current job turned out to be a massive disappointment, then why not?

There's always the chance that you'll look like you're job-hopping -- but the worst that could happen is they don't hire you, right?

I waited until the six month mark before deciding to actively pursue a new job. A year is better, but after spending 5.5 years doing a job I hated, I'll take the risk and feel confident that I can explain it to a prospective employer.

Yea I agree. My take on a scenario like that:

I'm good with people, and I'm also not a lazy prick. As long as I can get an interview, I'm confident I can explain anything on my resume.

And if I don't get to the interview stage because they didn't like the short-term employment on the resume, then I don't want to work for them anyway.

An employer should look at the skills and experience on my resume, and decide whether I'm worth an interview based on that. If he is judgmental enough to make some kind of assumption about my character because I didn't stay at a job long enough for his taste (without asking me about it), then I seriously doubt I would enjoy working for the guy anyway.

Make do, compromise, and you'll go places. Just don't sell yourself short.

NS I feel you man, but taking the quick way out sometimes is the WORST thing you can do. Have you studied up on what would be expected of you aside from what this fellow homotsu friend describbles?

ganassi does have a Le Mans team... that alone is worth writing home about. and it really doesn't matter anyway, racing is racing; at the very least you get experience and meet people that do racing you're actually interested in. F1 probably doesn't hire alot of people straight out of college.

I'd have to wear my Schumacher hat as often as possible.

The experience would have to be fun and possibly invaluable.
They aren't going to make you attend races (maybe) and if they did you wouldn't be buying a ticket and sitting in the stands.

It sounds like it would be intersting enough to make you want to go to work each day, the contacts you could make could prove to be very good and shitloads of money is flowing through NASCAR so it would probably pay good. (a guess)

Sounds like a great next step if you could get it.
