Work laws?

anyone know how the law works in relation to holidays? Where I work at I got a day off last Sunday cause it was the easter holiday, so what the company did was schedual me to work this Friday, to make up for the day I didn't work. I personaly think this is fucking anal and don't particularily care for it. Anyone know if they have the right to do that or that? Cause I don't think I got paid for the day I had off last Sunday and I ain't getting paid more for working today. so basicly my workplace just got away with not having to pay anyone for a holiday.
I feel owned...

have the right to do what, ask you not to come into work on a given day?
what do you do exactly? always got the impression you were doing one of those commision-based things students do in the holidays. can't imagine that gives you many employee rights, even in canada.

Nah it's a callcenter for a company called RCI
http://www.rci.com
Basicly we book condo's for people that own timeshares (in other words people with too much money for their own good)
It's good money but they like any major corporation they tend to try and work you over whenever they can. I think by law if there's a national holiday if they are supposed to give you a day off OR pay you for the holiday. In this case it's like they don't pay you for the holiday AND make you work your day off. I could live with getting the day off and not getting paid it's the fact they make you work on top of not paying you that pisses me off.

All jobs require you investing time.

I don't know about Canada, but in the US there would be nothing wrong with them making you work on the Friday, even if you normally have it off -- as long as you still aren't working over 40 hours without getting overtime pay for it.
In other words, if last Sunday HADN'T been a holiday, they could make you work today, and if today pushes you over 40 hours for the week, you get overtime for it, right?
So it wouldn't really make any difference if last week was a holiday or not.

Eh...
I know someone who works hourly and he absolutely rapes his company when he gets overtime. He's always pulling 60 hour weeks for the hell of it and bringing in an extra $700 for the OT every week he does it.
Edit: It's a shitty warehouse job. Imagine that, those pay a decent amount of money now, instead of being what I always thought they were, a $6.50 jobby-job.

Yes, that sounds like it's exactly where I want to be when I'm 30.

Actualy it does, because I'm getting screwed out of holiday pay. You see if I didn't work today I'd have gotten paid holiday for the day I had off. If I HAD worked Sunday I'd have gotten paid time and a half because that's the law. Instead, I don't get paid for the day off and instead I'm schedualed on my day off (cause now I wasn't on schedual Sunday so they don't have to pay the holiday) Plus I'm forced to work a day I'd normaly have off.
I think, I'm not sure here, but I think that the way the law works is that if the holdiay falls on your day off the company has to either offer you a day off the following day OR pay you for the holdiay regardless.

I mean, obviously, you should get paid for 8 hours on Sunday. You should also get paid for the hours you're working today.
Are you not getting paid for both days?

yeah I get paid today, obviously, but Sunday which is a normal workday wasn't last week. Instead it's my schedualed day off so they don't pay me for it. Plus as a kick in the face they reschedual me today.

They're not going to pay you for a Sunday holiday if you weren't supposed to work it to begin with. :icon27:

That's my point! I was! instead for that week, and only that week, I'm schedualed off Sunday, and work Friday instead.

I don't get all this contracted stuff. I work Sunday's normaly though yes. My schedual RARELY ever changes, in fact the only time they change my schedual is anytime a holiday would fall on my day off.

you are entitled to that day off in canada unless you have agreed to or work under a union contract that states otherwise.

when you join a company (over here anyway) they show you a form that you sign your life away on
its basically says shit like
contracted working days
friday - saturday @ an hourly rate of £XX.XX with a total of XX hrs
if your contracted to work on a holiday (bank holiday n shit) itll say it
and some other bull on how you will follow company procedures n shit

Yeah around here it's more like you have a full time or part time job. Full time is 35+ hours. That's it.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking too. I figure all this switching your shift around is to save money not having to pay a stat holiday and it's bullshit.

I get fucked all the time being an intern. I can't work on holidays and I don't get paid for it. So its nice having the day off but between Thanksgiving, Xmas, and New Years I lose 40 hours of pay.
