soon no one will be using XP so if you're going to get a crappy PC you might as well get vista and be done with it.

So far I haven't seen any real reason to get Vista other than the fact that its really pretty. It seems to handle multiple users and remote desktop connections much better than XP but I've only had it for a week now.
Oh and I never used XP CD authoring but I burnt an MP3 CD over the weekend with Vista and not only was it relatively painless but it worked in my car. The only flaw is that it doesn't tell you the size of your content queue versus the size of the disk.
Btw, I'm running the Business version.

xp is still good... if you are competent and have a solid 3rd party security toolset (spyware/av/etc.) then you don't really need vista right now.

It is more secure, out of the box, than xp. Is that what you seek?

Simple. XP.
skip vista, in a few years the real next MS OS will be out, i think its 2 years. XP is perfect as it is and vista is still problematic with drivers and such not to mention its a considerably large resource hog. They both arent that bad though, so for whatever reason if your leaning to vista, i doubt you will have serious regrets, especially after the first service pack.
my 2 cents.

Vista has that shadow copy feature where you can restore files back to a certain date. Its apparently enabled by default but I haven't tried it out yet.

for me the biggest would be speed and ease of use
thats why i was leaning xp
if vista is like osx ,fuckit

I honestly can't see much difference in ease of use between the two. If you've used XP for any length of time you won't have problems, and if Vista is going to have a massive impact on your laptop from a fresh install then you need to get a better one.
IMO.
Just to clarify, I'd go with Vista.

You don't really have a clue what you're talking about, do you? MS will put out a minor revision to Vista in 2 years as per the commitment Bill made last year to release minor versions every 2 years and major versions every 4 years so in order to entice corporations into signing up for Software Assurance. The "R2" version might add a few features but it will mostly be a security overhaul and patch rollup along the lines of XP SP2. It will be 4 years at least before we see another major version of Windows, so no, Vista isn't going anywhere.

na i can work any kit.
so two same hardware computers with xp on one and vista on the other.
they are equell speed?

by dzjepp
depends what hardware. if 2-3 years old, then no, xp will be faster. if you're talking about new hardware then both should be equally fast.

Well the wikipedia article says the next windows (vienna or whatever it'll end up being called) has rumored dates of 2009. but of course it probably won't reach that. Just seems to early. Maybe 2010-11

Im on Vista and I fuckin luv it. There's minor stuff in there, which tbhshould have been coded years ago, that makes it worth while if you ask me.
Ill give one example: on XP and previous M$ OS's, when renaming a file, the system would select the extension as well to be renamed (I dont hide extensions, I think that is very stupid and it is cumbersome). On Vista, it only selects the filename part. It's just those little things that make it more user friendly. It looks good, its way more user friendly (no need to regedit to change my documents source directory is and other user folders is another example) and is more stable sofar for me.
It takes getting used to and you will have to be patient for driver updates and support for programs, but that doesnt bother me personally. I ran XP from the first alpha and was hooked instantly and now I just cant go back to XP. Get a spiffy machine though, you'll need it.
