Should Judges, Police and other people

... in the judicial system get worse punishments for their crimes or more leniency than the average person? Or the same?

One arguement is to say that they are part of the system, and should therefore know better than most, and thus should get prosecuted with more vigor.

Another is to say that they have contributed to society so much by being on the side of 'good', and because of their good deeds, should get leniency.

How do you feel?

Personally, I feel they should be treated equally. If a judge, a cop, a prince or a pauper molests a child, they should ALL suffer the same punishment IMO.

Equal rights means everyone should abide by the same rules.

It depends on what crime(s) you're talking about. The law "discriminates" all the time (the good kind and the bad kind). Abusing power, criminality or whatever sort....should be treated differently when the perpetrators occupy positions of extreme trust or power, especially in the public sector.

I don't mean run of the mill crimes....Sammy the Supreme Court Justice rapes and murders his spaniel...he should be treated roughly the same as anyone else. However, when Sammy USES his position on the court to further some nefarious scheme of his own(bribery, extortion, lining his pockets), he deserves to be treated far more harshly.

This is why I think politicians who commit serious ethical violations or crimes within the scope of their official duties deserve to be loaded on a rocket ship and shot into the sun.

If a judge or police officer uses his/her authority to commit a crime, then it should be a harsher sentence. Otherwise, it should be the same.

edit: oops, late

Well those offenses fall under a different category and you HAVE to be a lawyer or cop or judge etc etc etc... to even be able to commit those crimes so that's kindof an oxymoron. The punishments for those crimes are for those crimes only so how would you compare it to anything else?

Not at all...sure, there are specific crimes that only some persons can be charged with (cops, judges, etc.)...but THERE IS A FAR LARGER CLASS of crimes (i.e., most everything else) where one's authority or status as a public official is simply a MASSIVELY EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCE....specifically when the power of the position is used to advance the crime. Surely this is obvious.

Sorry it's not... Anyone can use their position and abuse it. Depending on what they did they should be punished accordingly. If I stole a credit card number and a judge did the same thign we should both get the same sentance, just because he was a judge doesn't mean he any more or less broke the law than I would commiting the same crime.

It depends on the fact pattern, super-fly. I thought I made this clear in my first post.
