dunno how many of you been reading up on this, but kotaku bloggers have been posting info from their local brick n mortars and it looks like most of the people are going to be buying those damn things to sell online. it's such a mad rush that most people don't even know that most stores won't have more than a dozen or so consoles, for stores that have 50-100 people lining up for, rofl.
everyone is too busy rubbing their hands in glee to realize that every other moron is trying to do the same thing
it doesn't even seem like there are many genuine gamers in most of those lines, so who the hell do they expect to sell this to? this huge surge of ebay ps3s is going to force most of those people to sell at retail prices, or for close to none profit (making the multiple day campouts a failure)... japanese ps3 auctions are already selling in the range of retail prices
rofl... clueless people
i'd like to see that dumb looking smirk on their face disappear after they find out they will end up keeping their 'investment'

yeah, but wait until ebay is flooded with the people waiting in line. remember, only a small amount of them are smart enough to put up their pre-order online.

they'll be pretty bad when compared to other chips, but these first models will probably experience the bulk of the problems with manufacturing improvements forthcoming to positively affect the failure rate of future PS3s

And Sony is the one rubbing their hands in glee in the end, because when the time comes the real games are buying the console, the initial shipment has already been sold to money whoring morons.

you'd be the first one to report it to IGN. hurry up.
However, various gamers and retailers (with demonstration kiosks) have reported to IGN and on message boards instances of systems overheating -- we have yet to hear of a PS3 being put out of commission permanently (as with some Xbox 360s as well as early models of PlayStation 1) at this time.

My friend was one of the 18 people in the line at the local best buy which only had 18 units (no preorder). He sold his spot for $800 last night at 6pm, he was only waiting for 7 hours. Another dude sold his spot for $1000 and another for $200. Worst of all, he msged me that there were only 5 people in the line at 5pm, and invited me to come... fuck I should've went.

(I have not read most of the reply's above, jut want to state something in reply to the main post)
Selling the PS3 on ebay or an yahoo auctions(Japan) is a very bad idea, specially now. This is why, number one, you use local auctions and listings. And number two wait a little closer to christmas. Should make at least $300 of it, but my plan is for the PS3 to pay for itself. If not at least I get it half price.

not a gamble I'm going to take with $650 worth of a first run product. The thing will apparently still work on 7 SPUs after one fails, but how do you even know if they're all working? after reading this article, fuck sony.
With Reeves' statements, it appears as though Sony will be producing PlayStation 3 consoles with different Cell processors -- some with all eight cores operational and some with just seven. Reeves however does not believe that Sony will offer different pricing for the machines and only time will tell if there will be performance differences. Reeves says however that users will not see any differences in speed. "The PlayStation 3 only uses seven of [the eight cores]. You'd have a spare."
In the interview, Reeves also talks about failure rate as there is a possibility that one of the cores in the Cell will "blow" at any given time. Reeves says that usually, testing during fabrication stages will detect whether a core or more will be problematic. Using electrical "fuses", IBM can "blow" out a core during wafer testing. When asked what would happen if a 7-core PlayStation 3 ends up losing another core during operation, Reeves stated that the user would simply send the unit back for replacement. Unfortunately, this only applies if the console is still under warranty -- if it isn't, the console is dead.
The Cell is designed to run on 7 cores, not 8. That way they can expect to get decent yields and bring down the cost to a reasonable level. This is nothing spectacular, in the GPU business this has been the practice for years, 7800GT for example is a 7800GTX with one quad disabled (failed in manufacture). It's the same with AMD, they sell failed dual-core CPU's as single core, it's just simple economics, why throw away a perfectly working product when you can sell it at lower spec?
That talk about one core "blowing out" under operation is just bullshit, that doesn't happen, otherwise that would happen to graphics cards all the time.

8 cores actually, and Grudge is right, production yields weren't good enough so they disabled 1 core, on the whole the first run of PS3s may or may not be under any greater risk of failure than the first run of X360s or Wiis. That is to say they all tend to have an increased risk of problems in their first runs.

the whole "cell can lose a core(spe) and still work" is complete bs
first of all they have one spe already disabled, then one core runs the os, the other 6 will run the games and they are definitely not going to work if any of those go
and speaking up the core used on the os, the os itself (just the basic ps3 os not a linux instal) is always running in the background and takes up almost 100MB of the total 512MB system and video memory, compare that to just 32 for the 360

Not only that, but this time around they focused on improving existing technologies - making it more stable, quieter, consuming less power, etc. Nintendo isn't trying to cram more & newer chips into a box than ever before.
So on top of the fact that Nintendos have a great track record for failure, the latest one doesn't seem to suffer from the same issues that the other consoles do.
