My friend recently had the choice between the following amps:



$700 Marshall MG412 + MG100 Head Half-Stack
(MG100 = 100watts, MG412 = 120 watts, 4x12)

and...


$600 Marshall MG100 Combo
(50 watts, 1x12)


Guess which one he got...I'll give you a hint, it's 1/4 the size of the other one.

if the combo sounds the same i dont blame him, carriying a head and a half stack to and frow is a pian.

It's not that much of a hassle to carry...and the combo can get nowhere near as loud

most places moc the amp and tell yo in sound check "dont turn up the amp" lol

Meh. It would be a lot nicer during practice if we could hear him clearer

I have the bottom one; in much less ampage. Pretty good amp

I prefer heads and cabinets, but the MG100 is 100watts, not 50 watts from what I can remember. Either way he'll get a very loud sound out of it. I got the MG100 to try out, and IMO it sucked.

It's fifty, says so on the back of it.

Get the head and cabinet.

I haven't played on the combo, but I'm pretty dang sure there's no way you could get the sound (in quality or volume) out of that little thing.

Yeah, id of got the combo if i didnt have either.. if i already had a combo, and was serious about a band, id of gotten a half stack..

hell, my old crate combo was 60lbs or so.. that sucked lugging that, then pedals, and multiple guitars to gigs.. -_-

yeah, but i'd bet that the half stack had better speakers (Celestions) or multiple lower wattage ones, which typically sound better than a higher wattage Celestion.

Amps don't really matter anymore. If you're using it for a small audience, you don't need anything larger than say, a Marshall Valvestate 30r.

Your money would more wisely be spent on a Line6 pod 2.0. You can get any sound out of the thing, it's amazing.

i don't agree with you there. the line6 pod is great for direct recording, but nothing beats micing a proper amp for both recording and live situations.

That's what I'm always hearing, but sounds are moving to a more processed/digital feel anyway in the rock world. If you have the proper setup, it should sound better than a traditional studio setup.

Cleaner maybe, but better I doubt. Rock has always been more raw not refined sound. This is what puts me off with quite a bit of the newer stuff. It's too polished and perfect sounding. Where's the roughness, the main sound that put that kind of music on the map? Fuck a bunch of overproduced crap that has to be perfect. That ruins what the genre is all about. This is where this type of music has gone wrong. The good ones are out there, but they are few and far between these days.

"roughness" for rock, sure, but i'm talking about just having that tube sound, which i've not heard modeled correctly with any of Line 6's products or any other modelling setups yet. there might be something out there, but i've just not heard it (or guitar center doesn't carry it).

This is what I mean. The tube sound is what is defined the rock genre. I'm sorely out of touch on what amps and such are good anymore, but when it sounds too clinical and refined it just puts me off. Ok, I'm guilty of liking my Dream Theater and other 'polished' bands, but the sound is still there. It's like putting synths in Exodus, doesn't work.

"Tis a sad thing, yes. Was listening to some Bonded by Blood earlier. But if you ever liked any of the Steve Souza Exodus then it's well worth a listen. Along the same lines but more matured. Worth a listen in any case.

Guitar Rig by Native Instruments is the future. I also love my Tech21 gear for recording and live work where there's decent monitoring.

damn that is pretty nice!! I got a Digitech GNX4, but have trouble with the software sometimes. But I do like how all the magazines usually include a gnx4 setup for the tones of the tabs.
