I downloaded and reinstalled it, I wonder what the features and bugfixes are. Actually I don't.

yeah, pretty "neat" how "updating" means a total reinstall. check your add/remove hardware for other Firefox version installs. don't get me wrong, i lub my FF, but that's just retarded.

I grab a nightly build of FF and Thunderbird from Mozilla's FTP about once a month, in zip format. So I just delete the folders I have in program files and unzip the new ones in there, done deal.

sure, that's a "done deal" if someone wants to hassle with that. if Mozilla wants to get even more ahead in the browser wars, they're going to have to cater to your casual pc user who are not inclined to do the steps you did above and, honestly, shouldn't have to bother with it.

hangon.... what he's saying is you can just download firefox as a zip file, into a folder, and run it from there. Then delete the folder and repeat for any new version you fancy.

That's only marginally more complex that downloading an installer, running it, selecting a folder location for firefox, and removing the old version from Add/Remove programs.

I'll give you that it's a less-well-known-about way of running a program, but 'bothering' with it? Hardly.

I agree that Mozilla have to cater to the installer crowd mind, but I don't see what this has to do with dzjepp's suggestion?

my discussion is regarding FF's "update" feature which is not an update but rather a new install. i merely pointed out that dzjepp's way of updating his version is certainly off the track for the casual pc user.

what really gets me is that they call it an "automatic update" when i, among others, never get a notice from the browser that there IS an update since <1.0 i believe.

Tools>Options>Advanced>Check Now is not an auto update.

I had it installed for a try for a couple of weeks and then
removed it with the add or remove programs but all the files created with it at the time still have its extension, so I can't open them. Weird, also some files with the Explorer icon ask to be open with firefox. Do I have to rename them all one by one, or is there an easier way to solve this problem?

that's broken for some people and it was broken with the last two versions i've had. this was after complete reinstalls.
