Why does Terri Schiavo's husband want her to die?

This whole thing is so strange to me. If her parents are willing to finance her living on full life support until she dies naturally, then why fight that? Where there is life there is hope, and while it's plausable that much like others in her state have come back, she could as well. Also, if they keep her on the system until they pass away, they could set up some sort of charity foundation that helps fund similar cases where the money or next of kin aren't there.

This dying with dignity is a bunch of religious bullshit. Dying because your husband couldn't cope with not being able to bang other women and wanting your life insurance is less noble in my eyes than being a so-called vegetable for the rest of your days.

The law is seriously fucked up if it will allow this to go through as it is. Here is how I think of the whole situation:

Her mother: 1 point for her egg.
Her father: 1 point for his sperm.
Her husband?: Eh, he's only connected to her through the religious institution of marriage... A pact by law and through religion. 0 points.

Since both sides are trying to claim responsibility of her, then I say the side who is connected to her physically wins by default. :icon28: :icon31: :icon26: :icon34: :rtcw: :rtcw: :dork: :tear: :p

Perhaps he loves her, and doesn't want her to suffer needlessly.

Also: how fucking savage and unethical is it to let someone starve/dehydrate (even when they're a vegetable)? Ffs, shoot her full of morphine and let her sleep forever. She'll be gone in 30 seconds.

That because she cant tell anyone shes suffering because
she is a dead weight. Shes a vegitable. If i was ever in
that state i would want the feed out etc.

She hasnt got a life. Shes not living. Shes alive, barely.

YOU CANNOT KILL WHAT ISN'T ALIVE. SHE MAY STRIKE BACK FROM THE DEAD WITH NO FEAR.

I think it's ironic really. She wouldn't want to suffer and let people see her like this.... now the whole fucking world has seen her as a cabbage on the news.

Good game sir.

The upside to this is that I guess from now on, congress will be personalizing healthcare. A good step in the right direction. :icon14:

That's pretty much what pisses me off the most about this whole business. That man is being demonized by the press and religious institutions world-wide because he's trying to look out for the best interests of the woman he loves.

Try and remember that this woman's brain is mostly saline - people throw the word starving around. That is the right word, she is starving to death. But most people tend to associate that word with suffering, and in this case it probably doesn't apply. She is insensate.

I had written this long and intelligent post, but the boards exploded into tiny 'cannot find server' particles, so I'm going to make a summation of my thoughts.

I'm not sure what to make of this situation. There's been news reports that not everything's been done in the way of modern, technologically advanced tests Terri did not have the benefit of previously. The husband also would have to give up the 'less than fifty-thousand dollars' he has kicking around, left over from the medical malpractice suit, tagged for paying her medical expenses.

There's a lot more to this than we're seeing I think and the more that gets exposed the more I'm kind of leaning towards the parents taking back their daughter. I don't equate genetic relation as a point of responsibility for her safety; there's a lot of shitty parents out there to invalidate that. I think it comes down to who really has Terri's best interests at heart. I used to think that was the husband, now...I kinda think he's more interested in the payout.

Who knows, we'll see.

She is an adult.
She made the decision to marry Michael.
She made the decision to hand power of attorney to him.
That trumps the "One point point for her mother's egg and her father's sperm argument."

As an adult she also has the right to make her own decisions about what quality of life means to her. Her parents can't legally force her to live in a cage if she doesn't want to, and they have no right to keep her on life support if her wishes are otherwise.

Because she married her husband and handed power of attorney to him in a case like this, he now does the thinking for her. Since he (presumably) knows that she does not want to live forever on life support (don't kid yourself or anyone else; she is never -- read: not fucking ever -- coming back to a state of sentient existence), he alone has the choice to let her pass on.

C'mon, this shit happens all the time. Usually, it's discussed with everyone involved and people realize what's in the patient's best interest. In this case, the parents are selfish fools who are grasping at straws. The only reason it's a big to-do is because we have the politiking god-squad in charge who, like the parents, believe in the word of the bible over the word of doctors, and possibly over the words of Teri herself.
