Quake 3 Internet problem

hello everyone, im new to this site, so sorry if i posted to a wrong section, anyways my question is, i just installed quake 3 and tried multiplayer over the internet, but it wont connect to a server, can anyone help me out please?

Edit: To clarify, every now and then we get someone, like you, asking exactly the same question when they could've just done a search or read the stickied topics and found their answer much quicker.
