Got a PDA?
http://www.novii.tv/ works pretty well. You can even use it on infrared car alarms

My step brother is a big fan of this one:

Seems to work very well but I didn't use it a lot.
I've been wanting to pick this one up but just haven't had the spare cash:

harmony 880
it supports everything, including the xbox 360
if you happen to find some ultra-rare device that it doesn't support, you can send an email to the harmony team and they'll get support added and you can update the 880's firmware via usb

$250 for a remote?

I said the same thing when a friend of mine bought it two years ago... but I have to say that it is definitely worth it if you have any kind of home theater setup with multiple devices (digital media box, dvr, av receiver, dvd player, television, game consoles, etc--the 880 handles them all and it does it perfectly). I love mine.

whats the setup like. is it the normal point the other remote into the uni and press the button job?? if so, that's a pain in the ass.

Although, it looks like you'll need the 890 if any of your devices require RF signals instead of IR.

setup for the 880 is:
1. connect the remote to your pc via usb cable
2. the harmony manager (a web interface) will launch
3. you tell it the model numbers of the devices you have
4. you create "activities" and tell it what devices need to be told to do what actions for each activity--for example one of my activies is "play xbox 360" and hitting that button sets my TV to video input 5, sets my AV receiver to optical input 3, turns on the xbox 360, turns off all other devices not used by this activity (cable box, dvr, etc)... this is all customizable btw (it doesn't have to turn shit off, but I told it to), and it walks you through the whole process (asking you stuff like "what device do you want to control the volume for this activity?" etc)
5. once you're done telling it what gear you've got and what you want to do with it, you hit a button and it updates the remote with your new settings
It sounds a little more complicated than it really is--it works perfectly

the cable box will be irda not ir, will the logitech doofer be okay with that?
ah, google says you can get irda/ir converters if you need one:
