I want to subtract the all purple objects from the cylinder in order to make a sort of wheel, but when i try it cocks up and won't let me, i can take a slice out of the purple things if i subtract the wheel from them, but when i try to subtract them from the cylinder, they just form a union. Are the shapes too complicated? if they are how else could i create the object?

First group all the purples, then boolean them.

LMAO.
Using a boolean operation is like asking for a messy mesh. You would have been better to construct the thing as a spline first, and then extrude.
Is this a drive wheel on a steam engine?
Edit: Mod this to LEM.

It crossed my mind, but I couldn't be arsed to make it out of splines, I'm not too fussed about messy meshes, i dont have to do anything else with the wheel. I'm quickly designing a bridge for a competition at uni, i thought i'd knock out a few computer renders of my design. The wheels are based off an image i found of a winch used in a dockyard.
